Get used to it. I just went to a seminar on global climate change. General scientific consensus: it's real, it's happening, it's a result of human activity, and there's nothing we can do about it.
Local models say Wisconsin will soon have the clmate of Arkansas. God only knows what Arkansas will be like.
You folks across the pond in London? You might have the climate of say, Marseilles, perhaps?
How do you like that, Grazie? Instead of you going to the South of France, have the South of France come to you.
Quick, sell yer umbreller before everyone finds out.

"it's a result of human activity, and there's nothing we can do about it."
????????
What about buying cars that run on less fuel or use alternative energy. Better insulation for our homes, car pooling, recycling, etc.
Quite the seminar that was if you came away thinking there's nothing you can do about it!
Unless you mean the consensus was that people are refusing to help; ie still buying minivans when they only have two kids, SUVs for urban use, etc. Of course, that's still happening.
Last Saturday in Sevilla (Spain) that was 51º C "Bagdad is Here" :-)
Here, near Barcelona, last week we have 38ºC -39ºC all the days. And today I'm not sure but my keyboard burns my fingers ;-) This morning we have 37ºC at 12 hours.
Josaver,
What was the humidity like on the 51ºC Saturday?
The 35ºC in and west of London has an uncomfortable humidity. Uncomfortable for England - probably quite reasonable for somewhere like the swamps in Florida.
The Brits, we just can't help ourselves with regards to speaking about the weather. Yet the world is starting to join us now that the norm. is being adjusted.
Mother earth has the odd hic-cup which just makes what we do in damage to our planet more obvious. Perhaps we can generate some thermocouple and solar energy off this recent fluctuation. However, 1976 was drought and heat scorched (not 35ºC) for a good fortnight in UK. So sometimes I take the intelligence of modern science with a pinch of NaCl.
We like to think we are the caretakers of the planet but invariably we are it's parasite. Politicians have no motivation to change this situation whilst it has no bearing on them being elected next time around.
Way way OT. Yet I feel cooler for getting that off my chest.
Actually, I overstated the thrust of the seminar. All of the things you suggest are, in fact, helpful, as are energy efficiency, building neighborhoods that allow for non-motorized transportation, etc. Toronto, Ontario is the international model, having cut greenhouse gas emissions by over 60% from 1990 levels. The report includes a number of specific suggestions.
However, these measures will not effect whether or not global warming occurs. It's already too late for that. What they will do is help determine how bad it will be, and how long it will last, and whether or not we will ever recover. The depressing thing is, that even with all the mitigations in the world, we're still looking at 3 to 7 degree Celsius increases in summer temperatures.
The report, which deals primarily with the United States Great Lakes region is put out by the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Ecological Society of America. If you're interested, it's available at:
Well, I'm sitting here, the fan about 2' from my ear, water at the ready, the lights dimmed and no air! Absolutley airless . . . "Airless in London!" - ooo I feel a short movie coming on. - Hey my computer is on, using electrcity, ditto the fan, ditto the lamp [ ah yes that's loooow energy tho' ] .
Ah oui! The Suid de France, in London. Now - where did I put my beach towel and Ambre Solair??!
The Metrolopitan Line is reduce to 33% speed, 'cos of possible track buckling, the nice Red London Buses don't have air con., - the best place I found yesterday was my bank - full air con! It was like walking into a fridge . . . . I tell you what though . . Hyde Park and Regents Park have never ever looked so appealing!!! - Oh yes, the London Eye - our biggest tourist pull for a decade - has had to be temporarily stopped - The Glass Pods where getting too hot for visitors and steaming up! - I think it was that dodgey looking couple that did it . . . . .
Anyways, just done an Animated Graph for one of new members. Haven't heard a word back from them. No worries, I learnt a lot from doing it . . .
. . . thanks for the feedback on "Heat" every where else . . .
Grazie... lets see if my math is right that "only" 95F. Come on buddy, you English guys are a hardy bunch, you can take it. Just do your editing in your shorts and/or drink lots of ice tea. <wink>
Typical summer in my neck of the woods (Chicago area) we get over 20 days in the 90's and usually a couple past a 100F. Some of the Southwestern states are near or beyond the 100F mark ALL summer long. Of course the humiidy isn't that high.
In Chicago the buses are mostly air conditoned and so the windows can't open. When its broke (typical of the CTA) it really gets hot inside.
Houston, Texas, USA - just under 100 degrees. With heat index about 110. On the local news, they tell folks to not even go outside if you don't have to because of the heat.
I'm here in sunny Arizona where it will hit about 111 - 113 F today. I've been to London 3 times and wished it were 35c at the time. To cold there most of the time. Went twice in June and it never got above 10c. Tuff to take when your use to 42c.
It's funny, I remember in grade school many years ago, they told us by the time we graduated High School we would all be using the metric system world wide. Well High School was 30 years ago. Still waiting LOL
Dallas, 4 hours north, 105 today, 108 tomorrow. At least the grass doesn't grow. Plays havoc on the local pitch, though. Is rough on the players knees.

doormill - You're absolutley correct! We aint prepared for this heat + humidity. Air Con - what's that? Shutters? We're rigged for getting rid of water - not heat. Don't get me wrong it is lovely to have blue skies and be able to depend on the weather allowing us to make full use of our gardens for BBQs and the kids to play around. This is good. Nothing better than supping British Ale outside of an evening - really . ..
. . . blast! I left the fan downstairs . . again . . .
7:15pm now and it is still very hot . . . . BB, come make me some ice tea . . please!.
Blah... how can it be happening when it was 30 degrees outside everyday a month into spring here in Wisconsin? The weather has been normal since then, if not cooler than past years. I dont know jack about weather patterns, but the system seems to be hot one year, then cooler, then hotter, then... etc.. etc.. its all over the place. I think I'll worry about other problems =)
Actually the standard metric unit of time is the second, so time is already mostly metric.
What we need are 10 hours in a day, 100 minutes in an hour, and 100 seconds in a minute. That way seconds would only be 15.74% shorter than they are now so it wouldn't be a huge change. Then we need to get 100 frames per second for some fantastic slow-motion shots!
...and at 15.74% shorter seconds, 24 f.p.s. works out to a fairly round 20 frame per seconds. Not perfect base 10 metric logic, but certainly easier than base 29.97, base 25 or base 24.
Think how much easier it would be to add and subtract time! Who do I write to to get a metric clock as the universal standard?
