But I'm stumped when it comes down to what amp to buy. I'm pretty well sold on the Tannoy Proto-J's (especially considering the price) for monitoring, but does anyone have any amp suggestions? We use Crown D-45's & 75's at work (I THINK), but I'm hoping for a better suggestion...
Any reason you're not wanting to go with active speakers (with the amp built in)? This seems like the cleanest option, and usually the crossover comes before the amp and the amps are tuned specificly to the high and low drivers. Unless you are going for auditorium sound, have older speaker, or are trying to use a home theater reciever I think active speakers would be the best option.
Everytime I've gone to a store to drool over monitors, the salesperson will almost always recommend actives.
However, if you're looking for suggestions for an amp... I did see a nice little amp on the Yamaha site (Pro Audio section) that had 50W a side. I think it was an A100A.
I can't tell you if it's any good though...never heard it. This was on the Canadian site, so can't say if it's available where you are.
You will never equal the performance (Nor afford) the Crown amps, so its best to
go to the active speakers unless your made of money. As I recall it is about
$3,500.00 per amp and that was the old days price. Lets see, now you need a
couple of crown pre-amps, equalizers, and times 5 or 6 equals about
a million bucks. Then somebody to phase it all up.
