OT: USB storage device problem??

OK, tried Googling this problem but no hits or way too much to wade through.
Recently rebuilt Win2K machine after a HDD crash, all working fine apart from two minor issues, even have the HDD imaged using True Image.
1) Minor annoyance only. On many occasions when I cannect a different HDD in a caddy via IDE Windows says after boot that a new device has been installed and it needs to restart. PIA and this problem didn't exist before. Suspect it has something to do with LBA support but once installed why the ongoing issue, worse still Windoz doesn't say WHAT it installed. Like I said minor PIA but might have some relevance to the other problem.

2) Plug in external HDD via 1394 or USB and all works just fine. Plug in Edirol R-4 and Windoz resets the PC and during reboot goes to a BSD, says possibly a corrupted driver or a PnP error, that's really strange as it doesn't have any issues with OTHER USB devices. This same USB device has worked fine on this system prior to the new sys HDD and reinstall, and continues to work fine on every other PC in the place. I'm dumping the files off the R-4 on another system so I can keep working however I'd sure like to get to the bottom of the problem but lack the tools and/or grey cells to workout how to proceed.

I've run CHKDSK on the sys drive, no errors that I can see, will try a virus scan but I doubt that, no email or surfing on this PC either.

I'm loathe to restore the image I made a few weeks OK, my guts says it'll have the exact same problem.

Any help appreciated, understand if everyone is as baffled as I am.

Bob.
