OT/User Profile Service failed per Win 7 Homescary

bill-kranz wrote on 6/28/2014, 6:27 AM
I could not log in after this error message: "User Profile Service failed the logon, user profile cannot be loaded"

Here are some of the things that happened to me after I applied the MS fix which involved messing in the Registry under plain Safe Mode:

* Looks like the OS has defaulted everything to the original install state per folders, etc.

* Desktop view had lost half my shortcuts and had a new HP default screensaver. In My documents, videos, music, etc. I am having to reopen everything in my working profile name/User.

* When I opened Sony Vegas 13 and Studio 12 it was like a fresh install, i.e. no recent views of the veg clips I had been working on. However I am opening a few vids and they seem okay.

* Lost all my Firefox hotlinks/history URL's. Anyone know where they might be?

Anyway this happened without warning. If you value your hotlinks keep them backed up unless I find my listings then I will let you know.

Bill

Sounds like to me it might of made a new profile for you for some reason. Check c:\users to see if there's a new folder for you in there.

Yes, there is some new User Person on the block who is messing things up.

Mozilla had a method for recovering lost profiles but the last part of it does not match what Firefox shows but I feel I can recover my bookmarks over time.

When I find them I will let folks know.

Thanks,
Bill

Update:

Just found out there is a Backup/Restore button on the FF bookmarks menu area so I just selected a date to restore from and viola! all my past bookmarks imported into the new USER browser I'm having to use.

This was not explained in the help/search pages I've been looking at.

They were mainly directing me to a sub-folder file called: places.sqlite
but after trying to copy that the paste command was not available under the new USER browser file folder.

My next goal is to export or copy those html links to Dropbox/whatever place where they can be safely archived for all time immortal.

Just e-mail them to yourself.

But, did you check to see if a new user was created by windows? Doesn't take long to and wouldn't take long to fix everything if there were.

Rather than dealing with Firefox backups specifically, why not get into the habit of doing a complete image backup from time to time? I can't count how many times I've trashed my system (I'm always curious about what would happen if I did this or that) and with an image backup I'm back in business exactly as things were in only an hour or so.

@ HappyFriar: Yes, I did see the new user name profile but I do not know how to get my whole system back to the way it was. I will also email a test group of URL's and see how they blend in with my current listings/folders and probably just email them to my Dropbox account every month. However, once I found the right process they imported great.

@riredale: I am not familiar with the process associated with a OS image backup but I can review the automatic restore points and see if that would of helped me. Thanks for the tip.

Control Panel - Users - Manage Another Account

If you see more then two (you & guest) then for some reason you have a new account on the machine (not just folders). It should be just as simple as logging out of the current account and logging in to your old one.

HappyFriar:

Hi. Under Manage User Accounts and via the Start icon change users that new user is not shown like my Guest account and main (Admin) account is so I suspect it is folder based only.

That being said should I just delete the folder? Can that have severe unintended ramifications?

When I logged off and on it started up in my original account.

Is there a way to make it boot into my main account all the time?

Thanks,
Bill

Be aware that there are several accounts most users don't have access to, including Creator, System, Trusted Installer and possibly a few others. Microsoft fixes generally include files and folder that are installed and "owned" by one or more of these accounts.

I have found many Microsoft "fixes" to be disastrous, and my suggestions would be to either get a competent IT brain to help before you go further (especially if you have important projects or information that are not backed up). Or simply reinstall everything.

If you can't see or log into your usual account, I would do a Google search for "hidden user profiles win 7" to see if anything applies to your situation. There are several different scenarios I saw, along with some solutions.

Edit: Saw on your last post a thought about deleting an account folder... I would do thorough research before doing that. If it belongs to one of the accounts listed above, you could be creating a disaster.

If you rebooted and it started in your usual account, it probably will from now on. If not, there are ways to set up an automatic logon, but read this thoroughly and see if it applies to your situation, and if you want to go this route: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/377-log-automatically-startup.html

@atom12:

Thanks for the great forum link and other info!

I will hold off on deleting that folder and will delve further into
getting my system to load only with my main User profile especially into the correct folder grouping.

Thanks,

I encounter this quite often on customer's machines. Follow this

Retry the registry fix. Make sure you follow it to the letter.
