OT: v6 --> v8.1 = program lockups. Any ideas?

I migrated a project (veg file and all media) from my PC running 6.0d to my new PC running 8.1 on Vista64. Opening the old veg file prompted me to specify new locations of the media. No problem. Once that was finished, 8.1 would hang at various stages of opening the project.

Most of the time, for instance, it hangs at 50-51% of creating peaks, etc. right whan I open the project. One time I actually got it open all the way, only to discover that it would not preview the video, just the audio. At this point, I saved the project, and Vegas warned me that doing so would make it impossible for older versions of Vegas to open the project. I said OK, since it was just a local copy of the veg file. Yet, subsequent attempts to open just stood still at 50% or less, as stated above, or hang at earlier points. It seems pretty random, making troubleshooting impossible for me. I have to force a quit from Task Manager each time.

Are these details symptomatic of some incompatibility between older versions of Vegas and 8.1? Anyone experiencing the same, or just the opposite? I have no idea what is going on.

Thanks.

I don't understand the issues of going from 6.0 to 8.0 but I'd try going from 6.0 to 7.0 and then to 8.0 .. If you can get it to go in 7 -- then you know we all expected (and did) move things from 7 to 8...I may be wrong about this and others may have gone from 6 to 8 without issues..but I doubt anyone here can solve this as there are so many variables .. try to reduce the issue in size -- like going from 6 to 7 -- if you can get it to 7 but not to 8 -- then you start reducing the project itself to see which PART of it is refusing to load into 8...get it? .. Narrow the problem to try to find the answer.

I have a feeling that there's a change from 6 to 8 in the way Vegas opens some media types. Don't know why that is but I've seen at least one other complaint like this. You might be lacking a codec or maybe it's a quicktime issue...that's the sort of thing I'd look for anyway.

I use V6 & V8 regularly - for SD - in my work flow.

I have a 3rd party titler which is flacky in V8 so I do titles in V6 and nest the project in V8. Works every time.

I still use V6 for quick edits because V6 loads in 5 seconds and V8 takes 35 seconds load.

It may be the type media that's causing you grief.

35 seconds to load? Mine is about 10 seconds. I am running a quad 2.4Ghz under Vista Ultimate 32bit and a 4gig ready boost usb drive. Are you starting up with a project loading?

Harold, timings would be relative. V8 takes 7 x longer to load than V6 on my ancient dual core, running XP Pro.

On your system, I would guess that V6 would load in under 2 seconds.

The media are just avi clips and some generated media, and I stripped my old 6.0 project of effects before I opened up the 6.0 veg file in 8.1. I have a few titles that were created in 6.0, however, that I did not delete. I don't have 7.0, so progressively updating the veg file is not an option.

Yesterday I managed to get 8.1 to open the project. I copied everything on the timeline, then pasted everything into a second instance of 8.1, and saved the 'native' 8.1 veg file. For the most part, that worked, meaning I could preview, scrub, and render as usual. Sometimes, however, an entire clip would unexpectedly preview (and render) as total black. I delete that clip and paste it back into the timeline; then it appears normally again but previews and renders with a few black frames. Very strange, but totally reproducible.

At this point, it looks like I have a workable solution, and the odd symptoms I outline above just defy explanation from me. THere are too many variables to narrow down further, so I'll simply keep on doing what I'm doing.

Thanks for all the replies. (FWIW, in response to loading times posts, 8.1 loads in just a few seconds for me -- Q9550 and Raptor 10k :) ).
