OT: Vegas custom search engine?

DSR wrote on 8/16/2007, 12:51 AM
Never been very happy about the forum search function on this site and then hit on the idea of creating a custom search engine (http://google.com/coop/cse/) just for the forums. Turns out the forums are not crawled by Google: they are excluded in robots.txt.

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/robots.txt

User-agent: *
Disallow: /forums/
Disallow: /partners/extranet/
Disallow: /partners/resnet/

Just sharing.

By the way, has anyone tried to make a Vegas custom search engine?

Maybe if we suggest some specific improvements ... for instance, if a search reveals that there are 300 results, I want to be able to scan through them much quicker - instead of waiting for each set of 10 to load then moving on 10 at a time, I would like to go directly to, say, No.250

DSR, I've been privately using my own forum viewer for months/years. It's moved between three servers, and I've usually kept it on the D/L. However, I do mention it occasionally when someone asks so here goes:

http://madison.thewikies.com/scsf/ShowTopics.php

That page shows me a hefty list of all the discussions currently going on for all topics on these forums. Now, I haven't actually coded for any search box (because I manually enter my search terms), so here is how that works...

q = the search terms
f = the # for the forum you would like to search (see list below)
s = Whether to search SUBJECT or ALL
p = number of maximum results returned
c = current page of results (if more than one)

So, for instance:
http://madison.thewikies.com/scsf/ShowTopics.php?q=jonathan&f=0&s=ALL&p=10

That returns all topics containing "jonathan", from all forums, in either the subject of the message, for up to ten results. I'll admit, it's a shabby design, but 1. it saves me time and is easier on the sony servers than if I loaded their full pages (and i mean that, but it would involve some explaining), and 2. who's ever going to use it besides me? Well, maybe you will too, but these types of things don't get much attention. Most of the time, I just wish I could get a job working on the real website. :)

I'll also mention that I made another page that let's me preview my posts before I make them, here:
http://madison.thewikies.com/js/

I even used that last page to make this post, and I saw your post using the previous page, how about that.

EDIT: Here is the list of forums and their #'s:
All Forums = 0
AC-3 Encoder = 7
ACID Product Family = 1
CD Architect Software = 5
Cinescore = 37
DirectX Plug-Ins = 6
DVD Architect Software = 22
Sound Forge - Scripting = 27
Sound Forge Product Family = 3
Vegas - Audio = 19
Vegas - Scripting = 21
Vegas - Video = 4
Vegas Movie Studio = 22
Windows Vista Users = 41

This is very interesting.

My primary goal was to be able to search easily. What I was hoping to achieve was:
1. Search within Vegas, Architect and Scripting postings from one search box,
2. Sort the results by relevance,
3. Possibly add other Vegas-related sites to the index.

Google customs search seems to be the perfect solution. A shame Sony has disallowed crawling.

So you wanted something closer to this :

All fluff ... pssh.

The phrase "Hook Line and Sinker" comes to mind :~)

Is it working? E.g. try searching for "chroma key".

This is what I think I want:

http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=006682726536515738101%3Aftzlzwlolwo

Would only be of any use if somebody takes the time to add the relevant sites. I've only added three so far:

http://forums.digitalmedianet.com/*forum=sonic-foundry_vegas*&post=*
http://vegas.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp*
http://www.jetdv.com/vegas/forum/*

Try the same "chroma key".

Chroma Key results on my DSR-inspired Google-Style Sony Forums Search:

http://madison.thewikies.com/scsf/search.php?q=chroma+key&f=0&s=ALL&d=32&p=10

See, it picks up certain stuff. And the search options are working now. Sheesh, I liked my original better, but at least give me credit for trying to work on it for you.

I think it's great. I wonder though why the search results are so selective.

Anyway, I've opened my [three page] search engine for collaborators.

If anyone knows of good Vegas sites, please feel free to contribute. I think you need a Google account, though.
