OT: Video Download Technology

Just read Spot' latest industry news re: Bit-torrent. Like to start a new thread specifically about video download technology and see if there are any commercial endeavours that assist video producers in distributing their product, securely and for profit over the net. Have been waiting for this technology since 1996. I think I'll be waiting a few more years, though.

there is at least one company that claims to have patents on video downloading via the internet... they have received $$ from people who would rather settle than go to court... currently they are in litigation with the adult industry(??).

it will happen, but there are still bumps in the road.

The group is called Accaia (sp). Its not limited to the adult industry. They are suing cable companies/providers along with the adult industry. IMO, they went after the adult groups first in order to fund their bigger suits against the cable providers which obviously have better and more expensive lawyers.

In the meantime, a lot of companies are caving in and paying for licensing. IMHO, I dont think they will prevail. The biggest argument against their patent is that they have no tried to defend thier "patent" til now. Its one thing to have a patent but you are bound to defend your patent instead of waiting a considerable amount of time. (in this case, I believe they said their patent is ten years old. I could be wrong.)

The smaller adult companies caved because honestly, many of them dont have good lawyers if any. In their business, the less attention they bring to themsevles the better especially when dealing with the government, lawsuits, etc...

Ultimately, if they do prevail against the cable companies, I expect them to go after Microsoft. It should be intresting to say the least.
