OT: Video Monitor Distorting Image--EPM

Jay Gladwell wrote on 10/10/2003, 10:21 AM
Anyone here familiar with Sony monitors? I have a Sony PVM-14N6U that's somewhere between 2 and 3 years old (bought new). When viewing images (motion video and still pics) everything appears to look normal. When I view graphics (titles) the words appear to have horizontal ripples (waves) at certain points across the screen.

Without doing anything more than unpluging the cable from the monitor and plugging it into a television set -- the title graphic looked fine -- no waves or ripples in the image. So I presume it's an issue with the monitor.

Can this be fixed? There are no adjustment knobs on the back, so I assume it must be done on the inside by a tv pro. Or am I going to have to buy a new monitor?!

Thanks...

I have this same monitor. What are you feeding it with?

(Example: Vegas>1394>PD150 camcorder>svhs>monitor)

EPM, sorry for not getting back with you sooner. My set-up is as follows:

Sony Vegas>1394>Sony DSR-30>Sony Monitor

Geez, with all this Sony equipment, I ought'a get some sort of discount! ;o)

Just an additional note...

This distortion has become evident over the period of a few weeks. Now it's reached the point where it is impossible to ignore.

I'm afraid I'll have to send it to Sony's National Integrated Support Center in Atlanta. They faxed me a form to be filled out and shipped with the monitor, should I decide to go that route. It states that the labor charge is $120 per hour! Yikes!!!

I'm thinking I'd be better off buying a new monitor.

Did you move it to a different location? Perhaps you are picking up RF interference from something like your computer monitor or another source.

No, I meant I just disconnected the cable from the studio monitor and connected it to the television.

I'm using LCD monitors on the computer which are a short distance from the studio monitor. I think if this were the problem, it would have been so from the very beginning.

Strange I have just noticed a similar problem myself on a project.

The waves are only visable on a photoshop PSD that has several images on a transparent background.

I can't see the distortion on video and titles.

I am using a panasonic TV

Paw, I thought maybe I had forgotten to make sure that the graphic's colors were NTSC compliant, but they were.

I'm hoping EPM (Dave) will jump back in here and come up with a solution.

Dave, any suggestions?

svideo is feeding the Sony monitor?

Try turning off NTSC comb (if enabled).
Jay Gladwell wrote on 10/14/2003, 9:26 AM
Yes, the cable from the DSR-30 to the monitor is svideo.

Will try turning off the NTSC comb.
(Edit)
Nope... the NTSC Comb wasn't enabled. It's set on NTSC.

Thanks!
