This is a bit off topic. I need to make a video toast/roast for a wedding. You know, to be shown at the reception. Slide show of photos of the newly weds growing up. What the heck do you call this type of piece? How long is it usually?
Make it not over 10 minutes and make it MOVE to keep up interest--lots of effects.
I don't know if there's a name for this. Call it the "Geneology bit."
I'd say make it no more than 3 minutes - use comic music and sound effects (boinks, beeps, crashes) and cut it FAST!
10 minutes sounds short but is interminable unless you've got incredible footage.
Better to be a lot too short, than a little too long. You don't want them yawning or getting up.
Don't forget that every tv commercial you see is only 30 seconds long.
It's called a MONTAGE and it can run anywhere from 2 or 3 minutes up to...well I did 1 that ran 15 and it was not only 1 of the best I've ever done but 1 of the best I've ever seen anywhere, anytime. Of course I'm biased. It was for my son's wedding but regardless the trick is to use the right material in an order that makes sense and reflects the image of the couple. People think they can just slap together a few pictures, run music behind it on a laptop in PowerPoint. That's 1 way but to do it right takes planning time and good editing just like a good video does. I do weddings for a living and I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly. Play it during desert, make sure the equipment works right, don't wait until the last minute to do it because it will look like it, after your done putting it together watch it 10 times be objective and make the changes you need to make to make it fun, exciting, in good taste and something the B/G will remember for a long time. I know it sounds like I'm making a big deal out of it and I am. The wedding day is a BIG DEAL to the B/G and I as a vendor want to give them the VERY BEST possible. Of course it's also how I earn my living. For my son's I used stills and video interviews that were intercut thruout. I also used appropriate music for the images being shown. I try to do that for all of my clients. Most just give me pictures and say here do it. I also get music ideas from them depending on the type of pictures they give me and their personalities.
As you can see, there's a lot to it BUT don't get scared. Use good common sense, remember what you are trying to accomplish and have fun with it.
BTW I do about 40-50 weddings a year, have been for a number of years and about 40% of them I do some kind of montage.
Sorry for the loooong post,
I do montages this way
4 to 5 min of bride growing up I often start with the Elvis Costello Ballad She then a little piano music to finish up
4 to 5 min of groom growing up I often start with a song called A Song To My Son on His Wedding Day then Piano music to finish up.
3 min of couple together I often use Happy Together by the Lovin Spoonfull.
Thanks for the detailed reply RFP. I know that in video editing terminology it's called a montage. From the perspective of the Bide/Groom/Wedding Planner what is it called? In listing my services what phase best describes this to a client? I had initailly thought of it as a Toast or Roast. But I really don't know.
