Hi Sherman.

First, for a "producer's" side of things, see the thread:

Here

Second, since this is a Vegas forum (not a voice-over forum) I'll attempt to keep my response geared to people who use Vegas. The subject has been discussed in depth in the Yahoo groups voiceovers forum:

Voice123's biggest problem right now is their success... There are thousands of voiceover people who have paid their $200.00 for their membership - the ratio of v.o. types to available gigs is way out of whack - which might be an advantage producers looking for "low cost" vo talent.

I have gotten some work from voice123 - I've talked to directors who have used the service -- their biggest problem is the sheer numbers of responses "many who are not very good". Most of the time, when I've received an inquiry, the producers are not willing to pay the minimum fee that a professional v.o. talent needs to stay in business. (there are some exceptions.)

However, if you are new and inexperienced, services like this provide a way to "break-in" - and a great source of practice material. Most of the scripts there are not very good - the best practice material I could imagine - along with a great incentive to practice - you might just get the job.

Good luck.

As I expected.
Thanks Travis.

I was on voice 123 (as a voice) and found the inability to sort auditions by budget a problem. There were 5 or so auditions a day and I didn't have time to do them all and keep up with regular work. I suggested a way to filter out jobs by budget (why audition for something that's paying $25 if you open the mic for some other rate?). So I didn't pay my renewal and life goes on.

Travis is right on...the ratio is way out of balance. With low barriers to entry, and hopes high, everyone wants to be a vo guy. Just like everyone would like to be a major league pitcher if you could start your own team. Talent has to factor into it somewhere.

Sean
