OT: Warning re Dot Net 2 for V7+win2k upgrade

ken c wrote on 9/14/2006, 3:31 AM
Hi -

I just spent 2+ hours fixing my computer... against my better judgement I installed V7 with the Dot Net 2 required install on my production pc. After installing it, windows online upgrade automatically installed 7 hotfixes/upgrades to my pc.

Then it wouldn't boot up; eg hung up on windows 2k logo screen.

The Fix: I finally figured out that I had to boot into safe mode, then uninstall the most recent 3 hotfixes (that's all it would let me do before restarting), and then it boots normally. I started to try by uninstalling dot net 2 but it wouldn't let me.

Anyways, that's a word to the wise re potential problems with V7 + dot net 2 on a win2k machine.. .any idea or that? the windowsupdate.log said FATAL: failed to initialize datastore /failed to get session from datastore as the last error code set.

Lesson learned: for winxp, set a restore point first, and for me, I guess I need to reinstall the goback utility again, would've saved me hours.

good thing I got up at 2am today, or I'd be sol since I need to research/post trading alerts by 6am.

If you haven't already, you could install Vegas 7 without installing Media Manager. The Media Manager setup should appear separately during your Vegas 7 installation.

Then, after you've installed and started Vegas, go to Options > Preferences and scroll down to Enable Media Manager (requires restart) and un-click it to suppress any further missing Media Manager errors.

Right, Jonathan - that's what I did, as in V6, since I heard so many problems w/mm, so I installed V7 without media manager.

That's interesting to know though, eg is that the only reason V7 needs dot net 2, is as part of the media manager installation? (i thought it was mssql for V6..?)..

If so, I'll work to just completely uninstall dot net 2 as well, and see if V7 still runs ok..

great tip re unchecking the preferences choice... I also did that re disabling "net notify" so I wouldn't keep getting firewall prompts when V7 tried to phone home every time I ran it..

one thing I really really found valuable from DSE's V4 DVDs, was the "what to set for your preferences" part of the videos, it would be nice to get an "optimum default setup for V7, too".. hey I'd gladly buy a VASST V7 how -to DVD... if it's on the way.. ?

NO! The script functions use .NET 2.0 so you wouldn’t be able to use Ultimate S, GearShift, infinitiCAM, Excalibur, etc. if you don’t install .NET 2.0. Since I know you are a Ultimate S customer you need .NET 2.0 installed.

Thanks .... I just installed US2, looks like it's working, so I'll leave the dot net 2 in .. that's good to know re it being needed... appreciate it!

quick question, I don't see the keyboard shortcut icons for the cam1-2-3 in V7's upper menu bar though now, though US2 is installed correctly, pulls up fine from the menu.. any tips?

i belive it's a random mixup with your system. i stopped getting ms updates YEARS ago because one (a critical update) caused windows to slow down to ~1/180th it's origional speed. I'm not joking eather. It took ~3 hours to get to a desktop.

so the lesson isn't not to use .net 2, but to not allow windows updates. :)

how to get the US2 Cam1-2-3 shortcut icons to appear at the top in the menu bar?

Ken, you have to MANUALLY add them back. Just double-click a blank section of the toolbar to bring up the "Customize Toolbar" dialog box. Then find the items you want added on the left side and move them to the right side.

I use Excalibur and all I needed to do was to double click on the Toolbar to raise the "Customize Toolbar"; all my icons for tools are in the LEFT pane; pick off the ones I want and use ADD - then they appear.

Done!

thanks very much.. also I need to upgrade/install Excalibur, not sure which one I have... the bluefx plugins seemed to migrate quickly, so that's good...

I do like the preview window being scalable, haven't done any other project work in V7 though..

also I need to upgrade/install Excalibur

E-mail me with the version number and any other info that might be useful.

Hi Ken, this is the first thing we cover in the Ultimate S2 User’s Guide. Check the guide, it’s in there with pictures and arrows and everything.

Sony doesn’t give script writers any way to automatically add these icons to your toolbar otherwise Edward and I would do so in our installers. Maybe you can make a product suggestion to Sony to add this support. ;-)

thanks.. great to know it.. agree re sony could do that...

one project one of you could probably make some decent sales with is to create a solid titling plug-in for Vegas...or jv with the guy who coded bluff and turn it into a plug in for vegas, if that's possible..

we all pretty much agree that a better titler is important for vegas, and it looks like sony is'nt going to respond to their user requests (again) in this area anytime soon, so that's a market opportunity.

maybe ask around on other forums/dmn etc if it's feasible to code, to gauge market demand..
