I like simple tools, so Chuck's FontView works perfectly for me. It lets you enter a line of text and see what it looks like in all your system's fonts. It's a very simple, very useful piece of freeware.

Yes, its a pain to try to do it manually.

There a few applications that automate the process like Printer's Apprentice which I think is cool.

It gives you the option of seeing just a character or most of the character set on screen by showing a sample printing out "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dogs" or more complex print outs for one, a few or all your fonts.
