OT: What brand DVD-Rs work with Sylvania combo DVD/VCR?

B.Verlik wrote on 11/2/2004, 1:19 AM
Sorry, but I don't have the model #. I'm hoping most Sylvanias are similar. I have to make a few different DVD-Rs for an older relative with one of these, and if somebody owns one or some kind of Syvania DVD-R, please tell me the brand that works for you. Thank you in advance. Don't want to waste time, DVD-Rs or shipping charges.

I had one customer with three sylvanias. Riteks burned at a rate of 4.0 worked in two of the three. Nothing else I tried did.

Good luck, not a great player.

It is my experience that Maxel DVD-Rs play in pretty much anything, including decks that won't play other brands.

Thank you. I hate posting this kind of question here, but I figuered I'd get at least some kind of response. This is a pretty helpful forum. Thanks again.

Burn a DVD-R at 1x. Best would be Ritek G04 or Taiyo Yuden (Fuji 4x DVD-R sold in 5 or 10 packs only. Spindles are different ID and not as good. Look for Made in Japan)

Burn a 1x no faster.

It's funny. Everyone talks about the compatibility of these DVD-Rs but they are the only ones that give my Pioneer A05 recorder, sort of a problem. They will record, but sometimes they will only burn the lead in and when it gets to the end of that, the drawer opens and I get an error. It says it couldn't determine the correct speed. And no matter what speed I try to record at, it automatically kicks into 4X. Which in reality is about 6X. (that's what all my 4X discs record at.) It will say 1X but in 14 or 15 minutes it's done with a 90 minute video. I'm trying the Ridatas and hoping for the best. If they don't work, I have some Samsungs that will record at 1X. (about 1.5X) If those don't work, I'll get the Maxells. The Ridatas do seem to play in all the players, so far. Even though the drawer opens with an error, the disc is still good to record on. But I've had to start some as many as 10 times before it kicks in and completes the job. Most start right away, but 4X is the speed no matter what I set it to. (Don't ask me?) Thanks for the advice.

I have a Sylvania SRD3900 combo unit. It plays Prodisc, Fuji, and Maxell DVD-Rs with no problems, burned at 2x and 4x. I haven't tried any others.

OT: One irritating thing about this unit is that it won't let you record from DVD to VHS!

the burn speed is not relevant to compatibility.

i have sold hundreds of dvd-r's with xlnt results, the only blanks that i use are maxell and taiyo yuden... you can get 8x inkjet printable taiyo yudens for $.90 each in spindles of 50, at www.allmediaoutlet.com.
