OT: what is 8bit-vs-10bit Color space?

Beings that I come from the realm of shooting stills, much of the jargon/lingo still escapes me.

Since Vegas currently doesn't support 10bit color, what are it's advantages over 8bit? All I can seem to find out is that 10bit allows for more realistic transfer to film over 8bit..

Please enlighten this video n00b.. :-)

TIA,

Cliff

Well you have the same analogy when shooting stills. For example, on my DSLR, I can either shoot JPG (8 bits) or RAW (12 bits). The main advantage of shooting at a higher bit depth is that you have more post processing latitude. Basically, the software has more numbers to play with when applying filters, color correction and such, so higher but depth means more freedom. When working RAW with my DSLR, I can adjust the exposure after the shot has been taken which wouldn't look as good in JPEG.
