I'm working on an article and would like your help in some field research.
I'm trying to get a feeling for how people like all of us who post on this BB have become editors.
I WILL NOT use anyone's name, and won't do anything that would lead to your identity becoming known. I'm going to group responses, and paraphrase any statemens that I receive unless you specifically give me permission to quote you.
Please respond to jack@videoccasions-nw.com rather than posting responses here. I don't want to clutter up the Forum with an Off Topic posting. Once the article is published I'll post it on my web site so everyone can share in what I've found.
Here's what I'd like to know:
1. What formal training (school training) have you received that contributes to your standing as an editor? This need not be limited to training in video.
2. What apprentice or on-the-job training have you received in video editing.
3. If you haven't received formal or apprentice training, do you read a lot of material that pertains to editing technique and theory? (Don't include program specific materials.)
What books or magazines do you think of as especially useful for an editor?
4. Do you consider yourself a "student" of film and video editing? Do you consciously watch film and video with how it was shot and edited in mind?
5. Do you think training is necessary, or is anyone qualified to be a video editor?
6. What one book do you think should be in the library of every editor?
Thanks in advance for your help. There's no point in writing this article unless I've heard from the folks in the trenches, so I really appreciate your taking the time to answer.
