Well the computer needs to be able to keep up with the buffer. I'm guessing the new computer is more capable of keeping up while the older one gets behind. If you're using the same burner and the same media and the only thing different is the computer, I'm guessing it's an under run problem

Also, make sure you defrag the hard drive on the HP. It's a good idea to defrag often.

Okay, defragment the hard drive. What else can I do to make it keep up with the buffer?

I have an external Sony burner that will burn DVD's fine on my brand new dell, but on my HP computer (1.x ghz, 512mb Ram, 80gb hard drive with 40 gb free) I cannot burn higher than 2x.

Define "cannot." Do you mean that when you burn at higher than 2x, your disc ends up with errors? Or do you mean that nothing higher than 2x is even listed as an option?

If it is an under run issue, and I'm not saying it 100% is, after defraging your hard drive, one way to help your computer keep up with the buffer is to shut down any non critical applications. If you've got zone alarm running, shut it down (after disconnecting from the internet of course), if you have any extraneous programs running in the system tray, shut them down. That will help, but may not cure the problem.

The previous post was a good question. Are you actually getting an error during the burn? An error like "Cannot burn at 4X speed." or something like that. Or is 2X the only speed listed?

Maybe I missed this but what speed is your burner?

I have a 2.4X DVD burner and when I put a newer 8X disc in it I can only burn at 2X. I had to update my firmware just to let me burn on the newer media. It burns media rated at 2.4X at the max speed (2.4X).

If your drive is rated higher and still only burns at 2X it is probably because the media you are using is rated higher than your burner.

Try updating your firmware.

No, I mean, there is an option to burn at 4x, but while burning, it only burns at 2x. I've never been able to burn higher than that on my HP machine. It just won't do it.

But if it was a firmware issue, it wouldn't let me burn at 4x when I hook up the drive (via firewire) to my Dell, no?

I'm using the drive with firewire (it gives the option of USB), and I hook it up the same way, using the same media and same software to burn. I'm using Roxio to make an exact copy. It gives me the option to burn at 4x, but once it's burning it only burns at 2x. That is on my HP. On my dell it will burn at 4x.

Any other suggestions?
