OT: Why no SCS forum word wrap in Droid browser?

TeetimeNC wrote on 8/12/2013, 7:57 AM
Nearly every forum/blog website I go to except the SCS forums allows me to scale/word wrap the text to fit my droid display. Instead, in the SCS forums I have to manually scroll left right to read a post. I'm using the Android version 4.1.2 and the default Chrome browser. I have the settings configured to allow word wrap. It is a real pain trying to read this forum when on the road. Anyone found a fix for this?

Try the Dolphin browser on your Android device, it word-wraps the SCS forum just fine.

Thanks John, Dolphin did in fact fix mine - I now have word wrap. I'm surprised Chrome doesn't do that.

Well, in the Android Kit Kat update word wrap is no longer supported. Enabling Dolphin's Jetpack gives a different kind of reflow. Of possible interest to SCS - Google apparently now downgrades websites that don't support mobile.

In that case, your device manufacturer would seem a good place to start.

If you're logging into the full versions of these websites, they will decide when to wrap based on page width, not your browser or OS.

musicvid10, I think we are both talking about the SCS forums, right? I mobile, I believe it is the mobile browser that determines when to wrap IF the web site is not mobile enabled. At least that is my experience and seemingly confirmed by the linked article I provided. So I am surprised you are getting word wrap (or flowing text) in the SCS forums with Chrome on a mobile device. Let me be sure we are describing the same thing - what I am looking for is the ability to zoom in on a forum post such as this one and have the text word wrap within the resized window. That is what you are experiencing? What version of Chrome?

EDIT - I just tested in desktop Windows 7 Chrome and SCS forum doesn't wrap there either for me. The only place I have had word wrap for SCS forum was Dolphin before the upgrade to Kit Kat 4.4.2.

Well, that's not what I understood your problem to be.
Text_that_doesn't_wrap_ends_up_as_one_endless_line,_until_a_manual_line_break_is_inserted_in_the_page_code,_or_the_page_width_controls_take_over_and_wrap_at_a_predefined_pixel_width_or_percentage._I've_never_heard_that_alternate_definition_before,_although_that_might_be_more_common_on_the_many_phone,_portable,_and_tablet_forums.

Again, web sites that don't serve a portable version probably won't cooperate the way you want, which is called autoflow, I think?
I'm not able to pull up any mobile versions of the Sony forums in any of my browsers.
Sounds like a good feature request, though ;?)

Ah, but it did work prior to Kit Kat 4.4.2 with Dolphin, which John Cline recommended back at the beginning of this thread to fix this problem. Here's is a lift from the link reference I provided earlier:

"One of the early improvements to Android’s built-in web browser was a neat little feature that allowed text to re-wrap based on zoom level. It’s an obvious function,
something that seems natural for reading more than a few words on a small screen. Unfortunately, a significant change in Android 4.4 resulted in the loss of this incredibly convenient
capability for most web browsers and several applications."
