OT - Windows Explorer Crashes with DEP Error - Ple

Last weekend I suddenly started to get Dtata Execution Prevention errors from Windows Explorer and I can't now seem to resolve this.

It mainly happens if I run a media (video) file but can happen when trying to open a folder. Now I also get a message from Dr Watson.

I have taken the PC to my local dealer who have checked everything including PS and memory and found no faults apart from a SATA drive that was failing and has been removed. This drive was causing boot-up problems but was not the boot drive.

I have done several clean re-installs of XP SP2 and installed AVG antivirus, Zone alarm, Spybot and adawre before connecting to the internet then performed all the relevant updates.

All seemed to go well then suddenly and unexplicablt folder often started to take a little longer to open (not all just some) and often trying to view a media file would cause Window Explorer to crash with it's icons disappearing from the desktop and then reappearing as the Desktop is refreshed.

I have previously tried setting the Windows Explorer as the xception in the DEP setting window but I still get the crashes.

I have the latest version of WMP 11 and IE 7.

My system is Gygabyte M61P-S3 MB
Athlon x2 6400 3.20 GHz CPU
3 GB DR2 RAM
650 W PSU
5 internal and one external (own PSU) HDDs
XP SP2 all latest updates.

System fully checked for virii, spyware, etc and clean.

Any help as to what may be going wrong and a solution, please?

Possible chance that it;s actually a codec (for previews and thumbnails) that's causing your troubles. IF you get it on certain directories, with certain media files, then there's a high chance that's the problem.
If so, something like K-lite codec pack works wonders at sorting out codec errors.

Thanks for the reply.

I haven't even re-installed V8 Pro or DVDA yet. I have installed DivX (player & converter), VLC Player, QT Player and Winamp. But never had any issies with the above previously.

So far the only codec I have installed myself has been ffdshow-20041003.

Shoudl I unistall all codec and, if so, how and then install K-lite?

Thanks for the help - getting grey by the minute.

I had some DEP problems a while back so this MAY help a little.

Every time I tried to open a particular file, explorer would shut down Vegas sighting a DEP issue. The file was trying to open was a Cineform AVI file and come to find out I removed the cineform codecs from my machine (to solve other unrelated problems) and forgot to re-install them. So I *GUESS* vegas started looking for the codecs in areas where it should not have been and windows was feeling a little threatened..... or at minimum Vegas started loading the file into memory in strange ways due to the lack of a proper codec.

I've uninstalled the ffdshow-20041003. Does anyone more knowledgable than me know whether just installing would be enough?

I'm not going to attempt to install any more codecs until I can be sure taht the problem is eleviated first.

Thanks

Just an update. No crashes since uninstalling the ffdshow-20041003. Having re-installed Vegas Pro yet but will a little later. Too scraed now to install any other codecs other than those that cone with VP;)

Thanks for all the help.
