Xp(32) will be around for a while yet, but software vendors (including Sony) have stated that XP(64) will no longer be officially supported.

Having said that, Sony 64bit Vegas will be out soon and it will be a free upgrade to Vegas 8pro owners. If you buy into xp(32) you will not be able to take advantage of Vegas(64), so you may want to simply bite the bullet and go for Vista(64). I've been running it for at least 6 months now and am reasonably happy with it.

If you're looking at XP alone - then 32bit. XP64 just isn't good enough (I know some will feverently disagree, but XP64 support was never very good by anyone).
Therefore, serious 64bit options are Vista, or Win2008.

Vista64 is cool, and running 32bit apps within it is nice, especially when you have plenty of memory.

So, the realistic routes are XP=32, Vista = 64
