Some people here have asked for the best way to do streaming live video (as well as on demand afterwards).

This is it:

Toolfarm has a 50% off sale on Telestream Wirecast ending midnight today Pacific Time.

This software runs on Mac or Windows XP or Vista, and provides much of a $10,000 Newtek Tricaster for $224.50 (today only, otherwise $449.00).

Notably, it can stream in multiple formats including Flash, QuickTime, and WindowsMedia.

It also handles multiple cameras, titles, chromakey, switching in your Vegas media files on demand, and a whole lot more, all this going out streaming from your own machine to a few people, or via professional streaming servers for audiences of millions (LiveEarth had 10 million simultaneous viewers using this software).

Does it support live captions so we can comply with Section 508 standards?

[update: the Toolfarm blurb doesn't mention caption support but I suspect this can be fed into the streaming server as the video is prepared for delivery. We have used an external provider such as CaptionMax who, listening on a phone line, performs live captions that are then mixed with the video through a CPC encoder.]

Damn, sorry I missed this sale!

It does support live captions, that was key for me for a different reason.

I was planning to add the 508 compliance for the on-demand serving after each live event though.

Have you seen any live programs offer full Section 508 captions in real time? It can be done obviously, but it would take a skilled operator.

Damn, sorry I missed this sale!

Sorry, I didn't see it until shortly before I posted here. Toolfarm sent an e-mail to their list just yesterday (normally they are able to give notice at least a week in advance).

Do get on their list! I got some very high quality professional level tools from them in the past I couldn't have justified at full price.

Another interesting factoid from IBC:

Telestream is partnering with Wowza at IBC to showcase an innovative solution for live video production and single-encode streaming to multiple screens.

The Wowza Media Server that works with Wirecast is looking even more interesting than I first thought:

High Performance - the only solution for scaleable, true 24x7 live streaming

Declared the #1 choice for media streaming by the readers of Streaming Media Magazine, and it got the Editors' Pick Awards two years in a row as well.

20,000 in use, and it can even stream via Amazon's EC2 and S3 clouds.

We live in interesting times (i.e. we are more limited by our imagination than by outside restraints).
