OT-WMV player & Vegas4

System: Win98SE/256 megs RAM/DX8.1
I currently have Media Player version 6.4.xx and recently I have downloaded some wmv files done in Vegas4 (maybe some in 3 also). Anyway, the player tries to download a codec from MS and fails with an error msg. I have thought about updating the Media Player but I down't want to screw up Vegas (that's more important!). Does anyone have any input on the latest version of Media Player? Does it even work properly with Win98se? Thanks for any information.

wmplayer 6.4 won't do winmedia 9. Version 7.1 will if updated with the codec pack, and so will version 9 of course.

I bit the bullet when 7.1 & later when 9 came out, and haven't had any prob... While these are less popular among some folks, haven't suffered comparred to near identical systems that have stayed with 6.4, so the choice really is yours.

For alternatives might want to check out some of the freeware players out there... RealOne plays winmedia files with their downloadable plugin, but if you don't want wmplayer9, you'll shudder at RealOne.

mikkie,
Thanks for the reply. I downloaded Real a few years back for another computer and it royally messed up everything. Took over almost all of my file extensions. I am a little slow sometimes and after the first post, I realized that I could play the wmv files in question just fine from within Vegas 4, so I'll just stay with what I have. Thanks.
