OT: WMV9 Renders & MPEG1 synch in WMP9

A funny thing happened after I installed WMP9. Now all my MPEG1 files lose synch when I play them in the WMP9 player! And any other cd-rom software that depends on WMP to run. Gee..How about that!

Then I notice that the WMV9 render template for 3Mbps has a little note stating ..."Use this setting for high-quality video playback from a cd-rom".
What a coincidence. And since I downloaded WMP9 I find out that can't get rid of it. So I have to render to the WMV9 3Mbps template for CD-ROMs.
I can't use MPEG1 if the CD-ROM has to play via WMP and everyone has WMP. Well, I can't play MPEG1s on MY PCs 'cause I have WMP9...but not every one has WMP9....YET.

No, I'm probably just paranoid...Bill Gates would never...Why that might be...Nah, they wouldn't...would they?

I System Restored WMP9 off my machine because it gave me a similar problem. By the way, the MPEG1's I produced played fine as VCDs on stand alone players, but out of sync with WMP9. Now I'm back to normal, but I think it may have something to do with which MPEG1 codec WMP uses by default if you happen to have more than one on a given computer. Take a look at this thread over at DVDRhelp.com for something that might help.

Thanks for the info on System Restore. I haven't done that before. It's been a m onth since I downloaded WMP9 and I haven't installed more than two other programs since then. What did you do to protect files you didn't want to lose. For instance, if you installed a program after WMP9 did you have to reinstall after SysRestore? How about any .veg files in Vegas?

I've about had it with WMP9 so I would really appreciate any advice on System Restore.

You'll have to reinstall any programs you've installed in the meantime (you say you only have a couple), but your files (media, including .veg) should remain intact.

Have you tried doing what was suggested in this thread? There may be a problem related to the MainConcept DirectShow decoder.

Thanks for the tip. I checked out the posts and did a search. The search talks about problems with MPEG2 & WMP. MPEG2 plays just fine in WMP9 it is MPEG1 that doesn't play properly. Videos rendered in WMV8 in VV3 played great in WMP8 but not WMP9. I'll try the rename thing as per your post.

I also tried System Restore three times and it always came back with "Incomplete..unable to restore to previous date. No changes were made to your computer." Any ideas on what that's all about? WMP9 install even set the restore date!

Last resort is to blast mout my sys c: drive and reinstall WinXPPro and all apps again. Hate to do it but I've got to be able to produce media that can be played on other PCs.

Well, it turns out that my MPEG1 files play fine by themselves...they stutter and lose synch when imbedded in a cd-rom using specialized software. The software uses a command file to activate the WMP and there is a programming fix needed.
So CD-ROMs burned with a simple autorun command play fine in WMP9.
And I can render to a 3Mbps WMV9 (680 X 480) video to use in the specialized cd-rom software.
Then render a WMV8 file to email to friends that don't have WMP9 installed.
But I can't email them a WMP9 video.
SonicTSW..thanks for the ".HIDE" extension. It turns out that I was used to playing MPEG1 files in specialized CD-ROM software and that software was causing the problem.
