OT: XL1s Mic Adapter

tadpole wrote on 1/24/2003, 12:15 AM

Since Vegas3/4 doesn't support 4 channel audio capture - a couple of users recommened i use
Audio 1 Left=on cam mic
Audio 1 Right= wireless mic input

Here's the thing: Those familiar with Canon XL1s, Audio1 input connects to the mic with a little connector thingy (like a 2 prong Lego). So, if i leave oncam mic plugged in, i can't get physical access to other (right) channel.

In addition, Left=1/8' jack Right=1/16' (any reason for this besides preventing users from pluggin in backwards?)

Any one know of a away around this problem - Ie a special Adapater of some sort?
thanks!

Well now I have!
Explains things much better than in the manual

Not familiar with the XL1 (I have XL1s), but sound features seems identical?

So, (yes i'm rather slow),, article states by changing the audio output settings in VCR mode : The one channel vegas captures via firewire connection can be altered so its a stream of say Audio 1 Left/Audio 2 Left?

Thought i had tried this before & concluded it only worked with RCA output, not IEEE capture? Hope i'm just stupid & did it wrong the one time i tried it??

Please tell me i'm just stupid!
:)

I don't know Canons at all. And I didn't read the article myself. But I can't see the sensible use of two stereo channels in a camera, especially if you have to reduce the quality to 12 bits to obtain it.

The XL1S is also capable of four channel recording using the new MA-200, The best place for tech stuff is @ the http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/ This is the DV info community. If you go there, this is a respectable place, it has many very competent people, editors, producers and camera people that give out some of the industries top knowledge. Be polite and mind your manners and you can get a college education from very experienced people.

Another solution is to use Scenalyzer to capture all tapes using 4 track audio. It will capture video & Stereo1 into an AVI file while simultaneously capturing Stereo2 into a separate WAV file.

It depends, what do you dislike about the audio you are getting now?

I always get a background hiss noise with my wireless mike or the on board mike. Do those muffle covers help with this. I do interviews

You're likely getting background noise with the built in mic because it is too far from your subject. You can correct this problem by changing your recording technique (hanging a shotgun above the subject) or by fixing the problem in post (avoid this if possible). As for your wireless mic, is it a lav with a body pack? If so, what kind of system is it?

Thanks,
