OT? XP Can't Find new DVD Burnner

Plugged in new DVD burnner NEC on WINXP but it can't find or show it.
My normal CD player is now dead too!

You didn't say if it was external or EIDE. If the latter - did you set the jumpers to master or slave, depending on which lead it was connected?
