OT: XP error folder "access denied"

busterkeaton wrote on 9/27/2006, 9:17 AM
I have some folders that windows won't let me open. I believe this is from when I had a dual boot system and I don't loaded loops for Acidplanet.com.

I have since reinstalled windows and am the only user on the only bootup on this PC.

Is there a process or program, I can use to get access to these files?

You can/should be able to use a dos prompt to access the folder and copy it to your other drive- or the contents thereof.

You can also utilize a recovery program that will let you access files and folders and copy them to another drive. I have used both in the past.

I tried to go into the drive and copy the files, but was denied.

C:\E\VegasAcidMedia>cd 30-300-freeloops
Access is denied.

Make yourself a Linux boot floppy (Google!) and let that eat Windows' file protection for breakfast. Takes a few minutes, and then you have unprotected files that you can do whatever you want with.

I had a similar situation two years ago with an old archived PC, was very quick and easy to fix.

I have had the access denied problem on some folders on my Win2k system sometimes. If I reboot, I can then access, but that is a pain. So when it happened the other day, I did some googling.

I found this tool: Unlocker

There is some danger forcing an unlock, but it worked for me. When I looked at my situation, it was windows explorer that had the active lock. I have no explanation why -- I had closed all the explorer windows. I forced the unlock with the utility and then was able to access the folder (which I was only trying to delete anyway.)

Rex, I think what you are referencing is when a program states it is accessing a file or folder and you cannot delete or use the content until it releases it. I think what he is saying is that he has folders that are password protected that he cannot access.

Did you try to copy it or move it? Even if the file is locked by another application, you should be able to make a copy.
