OT: Yet another "standard" in DVDs

Jay Gladwell wrote on 7/27/2004, 4:53 AM
"TOKYO - Toshiba and its partners on Monday raised the tempo in the battle to determine the next-generation DVD format, saying they are on track to launch next year a DVD recorder capable of storing more than eight hours of high-resolution content on one DVD disc."

And the dust hasn't even settled from dual-layer DVDs!

Why am I not surprised. As I recall a small division of Lucent was developing an "8 different color" laser disc that will hold over 3 terabytes. And that was about three years ago.

Thanks Jay-Man! - Now all I need is a BIG enough DVD to hold the stories about companies R&D-ing BIGGER and NEW DVD formats! - I think I'l go into the DVD Burner Fabrication industry OR take a share option on LASER equipment .. sheesh! .. Just when I thought it was okay to go back to the Wicket - somebody throws a Googly l!?!

Lazer-Grazie!

so how do they plan on using all this new stuff? Nobody is gonna want to go out & buy a new DVD player ever year or two just because they keep comming out with better & better stuff!

:)

Can you imagine how expensive these DVD drives will eventually become if they maintain backwards capability even for the last dozen formats that were popular just in the last couple of years? Personally i'd rather just wait around with my good ol' 4.7GB single sided single layer discs until the dust settles and we've all decided which format works and will remain for a while.

More importantly, what kind of wretched content are they going to fill it up with? "Assistant gaffer commentary track?"

;-)

I agree with each of you. It's gotten to the point where all this is down right laughable.

Can I ask a really dumb question. In all the hubris over HD, anyone found a device apart from extremely expensive studio monitors that actually has enough pixels to display 1080?

At best the 'HD' plasma and LCD displays can manage 720 which is only 1/2 HD that isn't that much better than SD.
I think the reason a lot of consummers get all excited about 1/2 HD is because they finally get to see the video as cleanly as it was going to the transmitter via DVB. If you see SD DVB alongside 1/2 HD DVB there's not that much in it, yet analogue SD up against DVB SD is a very big difference.

Ah yes Hubris . . . a very much underrated word .. very appropriate to!. . .

Thank you for reminding me of its existence.

"...anyone found a device apart from extremely expensive studio monitors that actually has enough pixels to display 1080?"

Sure. Most modern LCD projectors will go up to 1280. Costs are down, now too, so you can pick up a pretty good one for a little over $1000. If I had the money, I'd pick up a nice Panasonic PTL-300 projector and a Da-Lite screen before I'd go with some multi-thousand dollar plasma monitor.
TheHappyFriar wrote on 7/27/2004, 9:12 AM
I've seen projectors with screens on Shop at Home (for the purpose of TV viewing) for decent prices. But, besides that, my PC monitor can do that res. :)

But when will the industry stop telling people more = better? I don't own a TV. I've got an old mid 70's NEC 29" monitor. Works great. Looks as good (betting I think) then my parents nice new Panasonic 27" Progressive scan TV. I even hook it up to my video switcher (aka surroundsound system) via BNC connections (the guy at radio shack gave me a wierd look when i told him that!) :)

Well, old does not equal bad.

But you guys all know it will always continue this way. In four years we will all be editing HD or over on super laptops in 10.1 surround in real time. We will have TB's of storage and burn to these new megaDVD's in 50Xrealtime, which is located in our friends house 100 miles from where we are. It will never stop. And we will still be amazed by the new organic flash memory chip that hold impossible amounts of TB's that they're announcing next.

The stuff we use today we will give to our kids to play with. Here daughter, go play and make daddy proud.

Hi Def is 1080 x 1920 I think the figure is, so gents please try again.
Apart from gear from Christie and Bahco costing big time I still haven't seen a LCD, plasma or projector that will display HD at native resolution.

Sony has a few monitors that I see from time to time that do 1920 by 1280. Nice looking, thin black bezel, over priced for now because they are LCD, but they are coming down. Not wide enough for the price. In a few years I will probably want one, but by then they will be discontinued for something cheapened to bring the price down. That is how the story goes.

Grazie:

The batmen play (or in Graeme Gooch's case attempts to play) the ball the bowler bowls. You actually said 'throws', but that only applies to Murilither Murilter, Murali That Sri Lankan bowler hehe.

Didn't see Giles' ball, sounds like a pearler though.

Hope your boys can keep those upstarts from the colonies in check :)

Anyone have access to an Enlish to American translator?
Chienworks wrote on 7/29/2004, 8:43 AM
Hannibal, there is no such thing. The thinking processes of Brits & Yanks are so different that there is no possibly way to translate between them! ;)
