Others Monitor Setups - not just NLE . . . Great Stuff

Following a recent thread here . . ..

Wanna see how multi-monitors can be used? There are NLE studios in here http://www.realtimesoft.com/multimon/gallery.asp

There are 5849 configurations in the database. You can search the nearly 400 set-ups for all sorts of technical stuff .. but you can't search for just NLE work . . . this should keep one of our Vegas Forum members busy for a while, I guess . ..

However, I did get some really good ideas of how I wanted my small studio arranged; I wanted to "see" what I could be missing out on; see what others do, to cram in as much as possible; what NOT to do; source some really neat ideas .. they are there I promise! And generally be "nosey" with other's "pits" and workplaces . . yeah?

Apart from that it is highly amusing to see what difficulties people get themselves into . . my overall opinion is the that there is a major "aethestic" reality missing when IT gets to replicate in a small area .. haha!

Have fun . . .. .

Cheers for the link Grazie.

I actually visited that site a long time ago when I still had a single 19" CRT. I've since replaced it with a single 18" LCD, and intend to get a second one, so seeing that site again has persuaded me to go ahead with it (though the prices are not that hot at the moment for some reason).

Of course I'll have to be the same make and design, to match.

I always like to have monitors at or preferably below eye level - it's much more comfortable that way.

BTW, I watched your Boris '(no) audio' vid to take a peak at your space - where do you hide your speakers? :-)

Ha - Well done ibliss! " . . . where do you hide your speakers? " . .very well spotted . . Here's a bit of blasphemy - close yer eyes Spot . . I hate the look of speakers . .they look ugly, they confuse my visual space and generally look nasty . . oh yes . .I do like the mechno-techno look each side of a Sound Stage at any Rock Concert .. in my Studio? Nah!! So, where are they . .well if yer look very very carefully you will see a very wide roller blind . . it's a neutral coloured sheet. For me it doesn't get in the way of the audio . .. but I aint no muso .. so this is why I said blasphemy . . . But, for me it's the visual environment that comes first . . the sounds sound great .. But, but but . .having now purchased a set of Senni HD280 Pro headphones, I just stick on a pair of these and I'm gooooone .. . well goooone .. ..

.. . maybe I should do a "quicky" of me sitting in my studio wearing the Cans HAHA! - Oh yes .. we could have CanMan of the month . .bit like a centre-fold in Playboy!?!?!?! Okay rubbish idea . . .

Oh yes the Roller Blind also hides all my books, folders, manuals old project stuff, ex-wife, lever-arch files . . yer know .. all the flotsom and jetsom and detritus of running a micro-business from home . .I live here .. . I aint gonna have things looking rubbish! Yeah?!?

Oh .. yes . .IF you look really carefully you can just about make out either side of the Amp, in the gloom/shadow the tiny side logitech loudspeakers .. very tiny . .but very capable .. well for my needs anyway . .

Regards,

Grazie

Oh yes, Marquat, speaking as one who went through some remedial physio-therapy to counter a nasty bout of arm and neck pains resulting from very bad seating and keyboard posture . .

Everybody else .. BE WARNED! . . it is very true .. .

Grazie- Ah, it all becomes clear! I've never found speakers to be a distraction, but then I'm more of a sound-y type of person anyway.

Have to say that though I haven't yet heard headphones that I feel I could rely on completely for mixing music, they are really great for picking up details that many speakers would miss. If you're trying to match up vocals recorded at different locations/times, headphones make it so easy to hear the changes in low level hums, rumbles etc. Hearing differences in room/outdoors acoustics is so much easier with 'phones because of the way they cut out the influence of studio acoustics/noise, especially true if you have a noisy PC sat in the corner.

Just started using Sennheiser wireless headphones - ah, the freedom! The occasional glitch when wandering about the house, and sound quality will never match wired phones but great not to have a wire trailing down my back all the time - now that does distract me!

Just completed a price check on a second monitor (LG L1811S), and most places do it for the same price - £404. This is a bit frustrating since I bought the first one for £380 last year.
Anyway, I'm going to get it from Simply Computers, because a) they have it in stock and b) they have a deal for first time customers where you get a 10% reduction from your first order. So that makes it a bit cheaper (hooray!).

I mention all this just in case you are looking at any comp hardware. To get the discount voucher (valid until August) you have to register at their site www.simply.co.uk before March 20th (I think). They say the max discount is £100 so that covers you up to the £1000 mark, which is nice.

Amen, While video is my first profession, physical therapy is my second. I also specialize in ergonomics and occupational injuries so if anyone has any general questions feel free to ask.

I have seen and worked in some truely laughable ergonomic edit and master control work areas. Most of the older remore trucks come to mind!

Hi Phil- just a quickone, is it bad to rest my wrist on the desk in front of the keyboard, also, is it bad to have armrests on a workstation chair and to use them whilst typing?
PhilinCT wrote on 3/1/2004, 5:05 PM
Yup.
If you are resting your wrists on the desk infront of the keyboard, you could be putting your wrists into too much exstension, as well as placing a pressure point on your forearms. Which could lead to carpel tunnel, tennis elbow and depending on the heights even neck strain.

Arm wrists are generally a no-no for anyone who is using a keyboard for long periods. It adds tension from the shoulder to neck. Sort of like doing chair push up with your elbows.

A good workstation would be a chair without rest, (or fold away one) and a keyboard that allow your elbows to be at 90 deg and wrists generaly on line with the wrist of your arm. Main monitor's upper third should be level with your eyes. Mouse should be next to keyboard. Feet should be on the ground " or box" with your knees also at 90 deg.

Monitor should be set so you can not see any flicker, (but we should all know that in here), no so for many of my clients...

Many edit stations I have seen push the keyboard up torwards the monitor allowing scrip or paper cut to be placed infront of the keyboard. The bette way to do this, (need to remind myself on this one) would be to place it on the side of the keys opposite the mouse.
