Can I Link 2 pcs via/thru a daisey chain of f/w drives? That is at one end of the daisey chain have my laptop and at the other end have my pc?

That is:

Laptop < - > F:< - >G:< - >H:< - >I:< - > PC

. . this is probably fraught with nonsenses and restrictions but it would be neat though!

Grazie

Yes, but you need Firewire networking software first. Caveat Emptor, because some enclosures will not permit this, but the spec does. Check to see if your drive enclosure passes voltage or not.

Wow, thanks SPOT! . . and you so busy with the VAAST tour . . ..

My enclosures have their own supply. The firewire hub and software may be a little daunting for me. Using f/ws in general will noit be assigned their own drive letters. Does this s/w do it?

Anyways, I'm would be linking an XP Pro pc with an WinME laptop. Do you see any problems there?

Best regards,

Grazie

Guys...I've tried about every combination. Without software, firewire nor USB will connect for me. Supposedly, you can connect two PCs via USB through Windows XP. I have yet to get them to talk though. However, I did find a piece of software that came bundled with a USB A to A cable. $29. Works with 98SE and XP so far for me with no problems and no set up other than load the software. Works like Windows Explorer...full drag and drop, cut, copy or paste. You can even print from one machine to the other as long as the host machine (one with the printer) has the same software. Quick, easy and even works with Macs (OS 9). I use it for all types of file transfers.

Let me know if you are interested.

Grazie,

Be very careful when hooking up two computers via the firewire port -- especially if they're self powered. ! I would recommend not hooking them up until after both computers are running!

I managed to fry my ADS Pyro card AND my ADS drive enclosure by booting up with firewire going from PC to PC. My cheap generic OHCI firewire card was unaffected, perhaps because unlike the Pyro, it does not have a separate power connector. Granted, one of the computers was running Windows 2000, so maybe this has been fixed with XP.

Still it pays to be careful.

Thanks - Chaps!

I've now got the 2 linked by twisted wire connection? - Local network that is working . .Okay running a file from a drive on second machine on the first machine is a bit . .well . . sluggish . . not a problem. Only wanted to link the 2 so I can have files "available" to both. I will not go done the firewire link thing. . . This is working . .I'm happy!
