output problems - completely stumped

okay, here is the deal - i am using windows 2k and everytime i output to my dv cam via "print to tape" with my network/internet connection "enabled" everything works fine. however, when i right-click and "disable" my network connection to save resources while editing, my output to tape looks completely horrible and has severe stutter and jitters.

so, my question is, "Why does enabling or disabling my network/internet connection in windows 2k have anything to do with how my video is output?" any answers would be so very greatly appreciated. thanks ahead

nathan

don't know why - but why not just leave network connection on if it works better that way ?

You don't happen to have a background program trying to look for a network connection, do you? Something like AIM, ICQ, Mcafee, Windows Update, etc? A program might keep trying to connect, and when it fails it tries again. Try logging in as a different user (or make a new one). Don't let the new user have access to anything except Vegas and see what happens.

Very good idea Happy Friar. Thanks for the suggestion. Thanks BJ_M for the response as well. I am just kinda confused by the scenario. I will get back if i find a solution. Thanks.

FWIW, I don't think you'll find a complete answer or solution, rather then turning off what you can and testing it out. Win2k & xp can have several services enabled that aren't visible as running programs, that as suggested earlier look for that connection, as do parts of windows itself that can't be turned off. Worse in XP, any firewire/1394 ports are automatically seen as networking adapters.

In my case I've found it easiest to use "Stop It" (By Mcdaniel devel.) to turn off stuff like task switching, any tray programs, that sort of thing. Then I set the firewall to block all, & disable the virus scan software.

interesting stuff mikkie about the firewire ports seen as networking adapters. thanks for the info. i will definitely have to check out "stop it." any other advice by anyone would be very cool. i will try all suggestions when i get home this evening after work.

Okay, still no luck. I have diagnosed the problem further, however. What started out as output to tape jitters and drop frames problems occurring for some odd reason when I had my network/internet connection disabled, has now turned into output to tape jitters when i specifically have my 3Com Network card disabled.

This makes me think that, for some reason, my network card and firewire card must depend on similar system resources or something which makes the output terrible when my network card is disabled. Anyone have any other suggestions? I have tried stopping all the running services as mentioned above my TheHappyFriar and still no luck.

Many many thanks to anyone who has a suggestion.
