Output to video monitor help....

I am trying to hook up an external video monitor for preview so I can see what the project looks like on tv rather than computer.
I have been trying to go through a Canopus ADVC110. I hook my tv to the SVHS connection on tyheback of the 110 (video out). I hook the 6pin fitrewire port on the 110 to the 6pin port on my computer, and the computer recognizes that it is connected. I start Vegas and go to the preview window and make sure that the 'external preview' button is pressed and that the firewire device is selected and connected. But I cannot get a picture on the tv. I can get the color bars that the 110 generates so the cable is ok and the 110 seems to be working. The 110 is set for digital in.

Can the 110 not be used for this function? Is it only for capturing analog into the computer?

Do I have to use a camcoder attached to the firewire port instaed?
Thanks for any information.

check the dip switches on the bottom of the unit - make sure you're set correctly for what you need. I've got a ADVC-100 and it's performed great for about 5 years. 110 should work this way too.

Thanks for the reply. I will give that a try. I did connect a camcorder up and was able to do the video monitor bit that way. When I get a chance I will retry the 110.

I assume you already selected the "S-Video" input on your TV. I seem to recall that the computer output is 6 pin and the 110 input is 4 pin. Keep the 110 firewire by itself---do not add any other equipment on the firewire connection.

If the 110 is anything like the 300 you might need to switch it to the correct direction too. I think from memory the 300 has an Auto mode that's none too reliable, so I leave it in Manual and switch direction as need. For output to a monitor the indicators say Digital.

JJKizak,
Yes, the correct input on the monitor is selected. I can receive the color bar gnererator from the 110 and it knows that I am trying to send it NTSC. The computer output is 6 pin but the 110 has both 4pin and 6pin input. It is my understanding that the 6pin allows the 110 to run off of the power from the computer and the 4pin requires external power to the 110, which I have. I have tried it both ways, 6 and 4. What do you mean by "do not add any other equiupment on the firewire connection"?
Thanks for the reply

farss,
Thanks for the reply. The only switch (except for the dip switches) the 110 has is one to switch from analog to digital (and to generate the color bars if you hold it for 3 seconds). There is a dip switch that changes whether it comes up analog or digital when you first boot it. I have not yet played with the dip switchs after I first set them as I thought they should be (which was the way they came).

Firewire in the early days was supposed to be able to daisy chain multiple equipments but it did get a bit confused sometimes so with video editing and capturing a lot of people just left the 110 on line and nothing else in series with it.

One other thing to check is that the project properties in Vegas match those for your monitor. Eg I am in PAL land - if I don't remember to set the project properties to PAL, I don't see anything through my Canopus until I change the template from NTSC to PAL.

Cheers

PS Yes - I know I can set a PAL project as the default by clicking the "start all new projects with these settings" box!
