overlay sizing

For some bizarre reason, the overlays of photos I'm putting on my project aren't covering the whole screen! I'm getting some stipes of the original video on the sides of the pix. I've even tried pasting them directly on the same pix. I suppose I could just cut the original video, leaving the audio, but is there any way I can increase the size of the overlay? I've tried using the F template, and could increase the height, but not the width. Even if I cut the original video, it would leave a black stripe on the side of each picture.
Does this question make any sense to anyone?
Thanks ahead of time.

Heya, try this, go to pan & crop of your picture, right-click and select 'match output aspect' option.

It also would help if your photos were the same proportions as the screen. Try 655 x 480 pixels to start -- up it to 980 x 720 if you're doing some zooming and panning around the still.
