I have a P4 3.06 processor which I'm using with an Asus P4T533-C RDRAM board. This should be about as fast as you can get with a single processor setup.

Unfortunately, since I just purchased Vegas, I haven't used it on anything but this system, so I can't give you a speed comparison.

I don't know if this will help - tonight I rendered a video to MPEG2 using the NTSC DVD template. It had no edits or any effects added. It was a 30 minute video, and it took 30 minutes to render.

Most of the info that I've read on this Forum suggests that the P4 3.06 is faster than dual AMD 2200+ processors. The P4 3.06 is mimicks a dual proc with it's hyperthreading technology. Too bad you didn't start using Vegas with a 1.0 Ghz proc first...then you'd appreciate the speed!

I have a P4 3.06 on an ASUS P4PE mobo. In most situations, V4 is quicker with hyperthreading disabled. With it enabled, proc usage is only about 110%...that's running only one instance of V4 however. Currently, V4 isn't really mutli-threaded as much as SoFo claims. TMPGENc, however, shows marked improvement with hyperthreading enabled. I can't wait for SoFo to upgrade V4's Mainconcept codec to the latest mutli-threaded codec.

Check out the "render test" veg file at the above link. You'll be able to see how your system stacks up. There's dual set-ups and singles in the summary page. If someone with a PIV 3.06 could try the test and post the results...

Hi MyST,

I rebuilt my machine over the weekend:

Gigabyte 8PE667 Ultra 2 (Earl Foote's suggestion over on Creative Cow)
P4 3.06 GHz
1024 GB PC2700 DDR Ram (Crucial)
100 GB WD 7200 RPM HDD

I did the render test last night (hyperthreading "on" and nothing else running) and
my result = 1:39 . I was pretty blown away. Now I'm curious to turn the hyperthreading off and see what happens a la Bill above.

When I ran some other apps (including WinAMP playing Red Hot Chili Peppers for my son ;-)) the time only creeped up around 2:00 .

regards,

JT

You just barely edged out my 6:32 on my 850 Athlon. ;)

I logged 2:06 on the render test this morning on my 2.53GHZ with the ASUS P4B533-V. For the cost of a 3.06 at this stage of the game...I would wait. My general rule of thumb when shopping for new horsepower is always buy the second fastest chip at any given time...it will usually have the best value for the dollar.

Cheers,

I agree with CuzinB, the 2.53 P4 is definitely the sweet spot. The only reason I have the P4 is that it was gratis...If I was going to purchase a P4 at present I would go with the 2.53.

Hi MyST,

Just tried the Render Test. Here's the system;

Asus P4T533-C Motherboard (Intel 850E chipset)
P4 3.06 GHz
512 GB PC1066 RDRAM (Corsair)
120 GB WD 7200 RPM HDD (with 8 meg cache)

Render Test Result - 1:35

It may have been a little faster than jtardiff because of the RDRAM

Well if I had 512 GIGAbytes of DDR ram, I'd certainly expect my Athlon to perform better.
Jtardiff's got 1024 GIGAbytes of DDR ram. I'll tell ya, I'm feeling pretty inferior here with my 512 MEGAbytes of SDR ram. ;)

Please don't send any letters, I was teasing. I know it's a typo.
