PAL DVD menu highlighting bugfix- get it here

SonyEPM wrote on 12/17/2003, 7:04 AM
Some of you have been having problems with PAL DVD menu highlights (this has been discussed in other threads), so for your convenience I am making a fix available on an ftp site:

ftp://md-ftp.sonypictures.com
Username: dude
Password: Sweetn3ss
Folder: "Pal DVD Fix"

Please follow the instructions carefully. Thanks to Udi for tracking this down- from all user reports it solves the problem.

Note: If this ftp site gets abused I'll have to remove it forever so please don't try to hack your way into a Sony server or anything crazy like that (it won't work anyway).

Can anyone help me, please?

Greetings from Italy

fammonti,

It's still on the FTP site listed above. I just opened an internet explorer window and typed ftp://md-ftp.sonypictures.com/

At that point, a login box opened and I entered the user name and password given above. (Remember they are CASE SENSITIVE) The screen then filled with 3 folders (one of which is "PAL DVD Fix") and a 48k.wav file. Double-clicking the PAL DVD Fix folder showed two more files - an HTM file (instructions on installing the fix) and a DLL file (which is the fix).

Try this one if you can't get to the ftp site:

Dr.Dropout@sonypictures.com

If you have either of these:
NAT
Firewall

You probably won't be able to browse the directory, even though you might be OK logging in.

The probable reason is that this FTP server isn't capable of passive FTP.
So you connect on TCP21 but the server, on list commands or anything that supplies data to you, requires to be able to connect back to the client PC.

The end result is that if you have a normal firewall or any form of network address translation (or connection sharing / masquerading). Then you won't get very far on this server.

An http link to the same resource or a tune of the server to default to PASV (passive mode) would sort things. However it might also be viewed by Sony as being more open to abuse, as the client would be able to do more horrible things with the transfer in PASV mode.

Still, I've got my download by using dial-up and dropping my personal firewall to this particular server name temporarily.

Hopefully this advice will help others aswell. Watch that you have the latest security patches from M$ before dropping your firewall or opening just a small hole.

Hmm... Mine went through both NAT and a hardware firewall and worked fine.

OK, thanks for that other angle.

So if you enter the correct credentials and then see a swaying torch (in IE), you might benefit from adjusting your firewall or using maybe a dial connection to evade a NAT. I suspect that ftp-data connections from Sony to client are a problem for some folks who have kit without that net savvy spark.

I was surprised that the FTP failed for me as most sites I hit that need FTP have adequate provision for PASV (passive mode) browser connections.

I may have made a misdiagnosis, but all the folks still requesting this patch via email whilst the FTP is available does show something isn't quite as slick as it might be?
