PAL to NTSC Conversion

A friend brought back a DVD made in Europe not realizing the format isn't the same. Don't have any source tapes to work from, surely I can convert it, afterall I am the AV guru. Sheesh!

Okay, I was thinking perhaps I could rip the DVD, rename all the VOB files to MPG, load them into VP9, rerender them to NTSC, rename them back to VOB, and burn them to a new DVD.

Or, I could rip it, use DVD Rebuilder to convert it to all m2v files, convert them to NTSC (providing of course I can find the right codec for V9 to read m2v files), and have Rebuilder build them into a new DVD.

Anyone think either of these strategies are workable, or have a better idea? I don't anticipate this becoming something I do very often, so I don't want to invest in any additional software unless it is really going to be useful for other things as well: i.e. something I really should already have, but didn't realize it. :)

Jim,
I've done this before, but a while back.

I used DVDFab Decrypter to rip the DVD and brought the files into Vegas. From there, just followed the Vegas > DVDA workflow.

Nero Recode can also rip the DVD.

One thing you need to be aware of is that most, if not all, NA DVD readers are set to Region 1. There is a finite number of time that can be changed. You'd need to change to the correct region for the PAL DVD to be read.

DVD Shrink, freeware, will remove any region restrictions when ripping a DVD.

DVD Decrypter to rip to HDD.
DVD Shrink to compress/reauthor
ImgBurn to burn to disk.

All freeware, and excellent applications.
