Pan Crop Question

I have some high resolution digital still pictures that I put on the timeline even though they were not in the same ratio as the video 720 x 576. I wasn't surprised to see that the pictures displayed in the preview window with a black border on either side. I was surprised however to find that when I tried to use the pan crop tool to zoom in a bit that the black borders remained in place even though the rest of the picture zoomed in. I could have adjusted the setting that the aspect ratio be set to that of the video but this would introduce lots of distortion by stretching the picture.

Does this mean that I can't zoom in using this tool unless I resize the picture first in a photo editing program so that the picture is the correct size?

Deselect the Lock Aspect Ratio button.

It doesn't matter if I have deselected the aspect ratio button or not because I find that in both instances I can't zoom in on the image without the black border remaining the same size.

I would like to zoom in on a high resolution picture that isn't the same aspect ratio as my video & find that as I zoom in the black borders dissapear. Can this be done?

In Pan/Crop, Right click and select Match Output Aspect
