Panasonic whitepaper on Vegas 9 AVCHD workflow

This whitepaper just showed up from Panasonic. Nothing new and I think they missed the main point of using Device Explorer - that it automatically joins 4GB segments and guarantees unique file names across multiple SDHC cards. But it is nice to see Vegas getting some focus from them.

Thanks for the link - and thanks for the tip on Device Explorer. I've always just imported the MTS files directly, either via Windows Explorer or Vegas' Explorer window. I would have thought that Device Explorer was for Sony HD CAM, not my Panasonic.

Any idea how importing the entire Private folder (rather than just the MTS clips) benefits me?

The only advantage I can think of from importing the entire Private folder is there is meta data there that lets Vegas and other apps know, for example, what clips need to be combined to form a single clip. So if you import the Private folder, that is what you would archive if you want to archive the original source.

I don't do that in my workflow - I use Device Explorer to import/combine/rename the clips directly from the SD card. Then I archive those if I am keeping the "orginals". But I can see some risk there if Device Explorer mangled something and it was discovered until after you had reformatted your SD card. So I may rethink my workflow and copy the Private folder on really critical shoots.

I understand that you only get a Private folder with memory cards. Hard disks or optical discs start at AVCHD, one level down. Any manufacturer is free to do anything of course. The file systems used are not NTFS so they have limitations in terms of file sizes and names.

I use Sony PMB to transfer files from my Sony HDD camera, because in the process the 00xxx.mts files are renamed to shooting time and date (very handy), with a m2ts suffix. An extra data file with the same file name prefix is also produced, but is probably only readable with Sony software. I don't know what is in it.

I use PMB for my HDR-SR1e and it is a lot less hassle than this private upload and then stream yada yada... Same with Canon stills. More information is probably lost on indirect uploading at the cost of the time. However, knowing the format of the manufacturer provided upload naming convention is probably outweighed by a little time spent in the workflow on properly notating shots, events etc in the events listings.

The problem comes when you incorporate multiple cameras from multiple suppliers with multiple upload mechanisms... doh! Oh for standards 8-)
