Panning slider settings

Can someone please clarify exactly what these settings on the pan control do? For example, if I record two instruments on separate channels, left and right for separation purposes, when I import the video into Vegas, I get two audio tracks, panned left and right as expected. I then pan both tracks to the center, and then I can adjust volumes as necessary for the correct sounding mix. However, I notice that when I pan to the center, I lose some of the volume that I had when it was panned full to one side.

I messed around with these options, but it didn't seem to help. So is there a way to preserve the volume the track was recorded at when I go to pan it to the center?

On a stereo track, right-click the track's pan fader, this brings up a power setting dialog, Select the one that best suits your needs.
Though.. on a stereo file with separate close mic'd instruments for example, I separate the two channels to two tracks. This gives you individual volume, pan, plug-ins, ect,
To do this, duplicate the track/event and select opposite channels.(right-click the track/event, select left or right)

BTW, there is also an default option setting (Option Preferences> General) to import stereo files as two independent mono tracks.. (by default single channel tracks are panned to center) but can be changed as required)

Sorry, I should have mentioned that. When I import, I get two mono tracks, the left and the right.

So there's no way to keep the same volume when I go from 100% pan, to center?

Are you getting two mono tracks or two stereo tracks with only one Channel of audio (left or right)?

Two mono, I believe? Here's a screen shot:

Panning to center should make them sound louder because it is coming out of both speakers. Unless your speakers are out of phase.

When it's panned to one site, the volume is louder out of the one speaker. When you pan center, it's like it splits the volume between the left and right or something like that

Set your output of Vegas to Mono instead of Stereo and see what happens when you pan?

How do you change the output to mono?

Can you post the file(s) or clips of? If you have A severe drop in volume when summed to the 'phantom center' in a stereo field indicates a phase issue somewhere in the audio path.

Sound Forge Pro has scopes and other tools for file analysis, if that checks out ok, your PB chain is forked up.
