parent/child masking question

Hello,

I'm using a color gradient mask over a title (a black to transparent to create a fade on the words). I can get the effect to work fine, however the gradient mask affects all the tracks below as well. What parent/child settings do I use so that the gradient affects the title, and the title only - and no other tracks.

Thanks for any help.

How about moving ALL the title track stuff UNDER a dummy Parent track?

Er . . ?

Track 1 = Grad

Track 2 = Text

Track 3 = Video

Set T1 Multiple Mask and make Parent to T2 - done.

I thought you were getting something MORE trixie than that.

Thanks for the feedback. After further investigation, it Seems like I had a color mixup. I was using a gradient from transparent to black. Worked with white to transparent.

By the way, what's the difference between the Parent Composite Mode and the Compositing Mode, which are both options on a parent track?

THanks,

Parent Composite Mode affects the kidz.

Compositing Mode only affects the track.

"..which are both options on a parent track?" Ah, you have found the cunning difference!

Really, if you wish to affect the track and THAT track only then you use the Track Compositing. Using the Parent Compositing it will affect the child too. The fact that they are both "present" on a track, which may TOO be a Parent, if you think about it, is a real valuable feature. Now you can apply single track compositing or the parent. However . . . deep breath here . . . I can apply some combinations that will interact as well.

What IS valuable is that you can adjust a Parent Composite and not affect say the 3rd, non-child track. Also, Parent motion will only affect the position of any child tracks below.

Personally, I am waiting for a thorough, creative Parent Compo tutorial to be released, to once and for all layout the interactions that are possible - and believe me there are many permutations.

In this particular case i don't think parent/child is necessary at all, nor helpful. Simply setting the top track to multiply/mask is sufficient to get the job done.

As far as masking is concerned, Vegas "sees" black and transparent as the same thing.

"In this particular case i don't think parent/child is necessary at all, nor helpful." Well I certainly "see" your point. Now substitute a Checkerboard GenMed and repeat? I get checkers on underlying tracks too.

"Simply setting the top track to multiply/mask is sufficient to get the job done. - Not from where I'm sitting Kelso, not with Checkerboard? It was because our friend had found out:-

" I can get the effect to work fine, however the gradient mask affects all the tracks below as well." - and it still will with your suggestion. I can ONLY get the GradMAsk to only affect the Text if the Text Track is a Child to the GradMask.

Tell me, WHY does checkerboard create checkers on ALL tracks, but the Linear White to Black GenMed Grad doesn't? I need to set Track 2 as a Child for the checkers to be retained "within" the text "mask".

Confused?
