Particle Illusion into Vegas, best codec?

OK, got the free PI-SE from DIGIT mag. Upgraded to PI3 'cause it's so much fun.

Got a Vegas clip I'd like to "blow up" in PI. Render to a new clip file with "Create OpenDML file" disabled, just like you all told me to. Open it as a background in PI and I'm off.

Ready to render out of PI for use in Vegas. DV2 is not an option. What's the best output codec to reintroduce the clip to Vegas? DV1? DVSoft? etc?

Related issue. How about if I just delete the background and render out the PI effects to be used as an overlay back in Vegas??? Pros? Cons?

Thanks. Hi Grazie. DGrob

Uee the uncompressed AVI setting, it will take up a lot of space, but it will look the best in the end.

I've always gotten rid of the background and saved as a sequence of TGA files. That works fine for me (and hold the alpha!).

Thank you both. I was afraid it was going to be uncompressed. But I like the TGA concept. Gonna try it right off. DGrob

You could output to DV if you have a DV codec. The Sonic Foundry one is proprietary and can only be used by Vegas. Panasonic has a freely available codec (which is what I use) or you could buy one. Just do a google search for "free Panasonic DV codec" and you’ll find it. I got mine with my Panasonic DV camcorder. This will let you save using the DV codec from any video application.

TGA is the only way to go if you need an alpha channel to composite later in Vegas. It gives the best alpha quality.
