Pasting Text to Credit Roll

MichaelS wrote on 10/7/2004, 9:00 PM
In order to roll lengthy text, it's much easier to copy/paste from MS Word (or other text program). Often, especially when I use an OCR program to import a columned newspaper article, the sentences copy/paste to Vegas as one long sentence instead of "word wrapping". This usually happens after I edit the text. Obviously, when I edit the text, I'm screwing up the unseen markers that denote an "end of line".

I've made it work properly by trial and error, but can't seem to nail down the exact procedure. It's NOT simply turning on word wrap. If I knew what type of commands or markers Vegas is looking for, then perhaps I could set up MS Word to the proper format.

Has anyone else experienced my frustration. Can you share a solution or procedure that will work?

Thanks

Don't use MS Word. You are looking for a complex solution to a simple problem. Use a text editor that inserts hard returns at the end of each line.

Actually, there simply aren't any markers, either seen or un-seen, that mark the end of the line in any wordprocessor. That is why you can change the margins, and all the lines in the paragraph will re-format.

However, if you have already laid everything out in the word processor, and you want the text to appear in the Vegas credit roll with exactly the line breaks you see on screen, then you can simply use the Save As facility in Word, but then save it as "Text with Layout" and it will insert the line breaks. Open the resulting "Text with Layout" file in Word or Notepad and then copy/paste into Vegas.

If the "Text with Layout" converter is not installed on your computer, you will be prompted to insert your installation disk and it will then install the converter.

[Edit] Actually, my installation of Word was temporarily screwed up when I wrote the above (long story about a broken Office SP3 update). I fixed that problem and went back to verify the above. Two slight changes:

1. You can actually just use the "Save As Type" setting of "Plain Text".
2. When you save as "Plain Text" you get a File Conversion dialog. Click on the "Insert Line Breaks" checkbox.
3. Open the resulting file in Notepad. If you open it in Word, and you have autoconversions enabled (which is the default), it will convert it right back into a normal word processing document, and you will have gotten nowhere. Open it in Notepad and then copy/paste into Vegas.

"Open it in Notepad and then copy/past into Vegas."
Have tested your advice and it works perfect up to this point.
When I try to paste it into credit roll I can only get the first line
of the text.
What am I doing wrong?

I'll repost the answer I got from jeditdv on another forum that taught me the right way to do this. The last line is the key to getting it towork successfully. Hope it helps.

Mike

I opened Notepad, entered my text and pressed return for a single line, entered text, tab, text and then return for a two wide line. I entered several lines of text (even just pressed "Enter" to get a couple of blank lines). After I had about a dozen lines, I highlighted them all and pressed CTRL-C. Next I went to the generated media scrolling text dialog. I clicked on the first line where you can enter the text, pressed CTRL-V, and all of the lines were added to my scrolling list.

NOTE: When I clicked on the first line, I clicked on the HEADER button for that line simply to select that line - I did NOT "Double-click" the text to *edit* it.

Wow, that worked perfect for me. Didn't know that would work. Makes entering credits a hunderd times easier.

Thanks

Michael,

I have a simple Text Editor that was designed specifically for pasting into Vegas.

You can set the width of the text window, font and size to match your Vegas settings. This helps you to see if what you are typing will fit the aspect ratio of your Vegas project.

Any text you type into the editor is automatically copied to the Windows clipboard with carriage returns and line feeds.

It's free to anybody that wants a copy.

I can either e-mail it directly or post it up somewhere.

Alan.
If you email me a copy I'll post it on my site and make it available to everyone here.

Allright everyone, You can download Alan's editor from http://www.sevillemedia.com/misc/copytext.zip

The nice thing is that whatever you type in there is automatically copied to clipboard, so you can skip the CTRL-C step.

Very simple and very usefull.
Thanks Alan
