Pazera's .MOV to .AVI video converter software

Hello.

I've been collecting H.264/MOV video clips with my new Canon Powershot SX 20 IS
and looking for a free video converter software package so that my Sony Vegas Pro 8.0c can edit the video stream.
I have dl'd Pazera's free .MOV to .AVI video converter software just tonight and tried 2 conversion attempts. The first for .WMV and the second a Xvid 1.2.1 format.
Things seemed fine but in the timeline only the audio showed up and no video.
Has anyone used this program in such a way as to get this to properly convert to .avi or anything that Vegas can see as video?
None of my friends have Apple computers and I am otherwise firmly entrenched in the PC world.
Now I am afraid to buy a retail offering since the same thing may happen. These clips look real good and I am happy with the camera but this whole MOV thing is turning into a big turnoff.
Please help me out of the wilderness and into the true path if you can help me those with more wisdom than lonely I.

Thanks,
Bill

I think there should be a sticky thread on the whole AVC / H264 / convert / proxy process..

You can do all of your conversion with Vegas if you like. You just need the correct
quicktime version installed. I ran accoss this somewhere else in the forum when I had a quicktime issue.

"Just got the solution form mike on my other post.. here try this.
Uninstall any version of quicktime you have
download version 7.6.4 half way down this page. and install it."

Once you do that you can probably drag and drop the /mov files directly into vegas. Play back will suck but it will work.
then you can re render as sony MXF and work with those. I use vegas scripts to convert them all automatically.

( there are a whole bunch of other options here, search the forum on H264, MXF, cinform, dnxhd, proxy , ect.)

Also you might look at DVFilm Epic I, which now works with
Vegas 9 32 and 64-bit. You can edit real time and totally
skip the transcoding process. http://dvfilm.com/epic

Epic doesn't work with footage from my Canon SX1-IS which is similar to your SX20. I would try the demo and make sure.

Neo Scene will do exactly what you want but it isn't free. Not only will it convert the footage to avi, but it will slow it down 1% to make it an industry standard 29.97 fps rather than exactly 30p and it will adjust the colors from cRGB to sRGB range which looks much better on an HDTV.

Hello K-Decisive:

Thanks for the info. I have QT V. 7.6.6 but if you think your idea for 7.6.4 would work better I suppose I can try that version.

I am familiar with the 2 other programs mentioned in the postings and will also look into the trial
programs especially Epic and Neo Scene sounds good to.
In a few weeks I'll have some extra cash for a new program purchase.

Thanks,
Bill K.

Quicktime 7.6.4 does not work with many Vegas 8.0c installations.
Safest bet is 7.6.2 or 7.6
7.6.6 is supposed to work with Vegas 9.0e

laurence converts his Canon SX footage with NeoScene, although its not free.

I was playing with this a little more yesterday. If I use Sony MXF, I'm only going to use them as proxy only. There seems to be a bit of an aspect problem and small quality loss even at 422. The stuff off the canons ( and probably all of these newer cams ) seems to have a wider dynamic range, which is wonderful, but the sony MXF might chop it off a bit. After I switched back to the source material, I gave it a little bit of a 'grade' and rendered with that, works and looks great...

As far as the QT version, that's just the one that works for me, I'm on the latest 8.0 version. it could be different for other people.it seems one of the main issues with Vegas is caused by.........Snapple.......

I use Raylight from DV film for my 200 and it's been really good. From what I've read for Epic, you need to run vegas 9.0 32bit for now. When I upgrade I'll defiantly look into it myself. Raylight is nice because you don't need need to transcode and use all that extra space, just drag and drop and go. However it's nice to have something like cineform or Dnxhd for intermediate rendering. I use dnxHD because it's free and is available for PC and Mac. However, when ever I run the directory convert script, it seems to fail on any kind of .MOV output, which is the only one available for dnxhd................yeash.....
