Hi,
I use a VX2000 and I believe they're the same in most respects. The headset volume is controlled by the monitoring volume w/o a headset on the side of the flipout screen.

It is on the LCD Screen on the left under the brightness controls for the screen.

It's where FishEyes said...

if you're using automatic audio gain control, stop reading here.

If you're using manual volume control, then be careful not to do something I did once: I turned up the headset volume and didn't pay close attention to the levels-monitor in the viewscreen. The recorded volume was quite low, but I hid that fact from myself by turning up the headset volume. I only needed to do that one time... Now I always remember to pay CLOSE attention to the levels indicators, when I'm using manual volume control (which is most of the time, for the kinds of projects I shoot).

Thanks for the speedy reply - hard to see how I could have missed that!
Earthriser's caution is well noted - could easily happen if not paying close attention.
