Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon???

Since I started to have all kind of problems with my Vaio laptop I'm concidering upgrading to a desktop designed for video editing. I know what I want in terms of HDD (at least 250GB) RAM (at least 1GB) and video adapter (ATI Radeon w/256MB) and everything else (firewire, 5.1 sound card, etc.) but my biggest issue is, should I stick with Intel or should I go Athlon?? All reviews and comparisions mark AMD as the winner (64bits) but I still have my concerns on compatibility with all kind of programs and aplications.

any ideas, sugestions?

Not to be too flippant about it, but buy a machine with the most memory and the fastest CPU you can get. Also, buy it from a company with a good reputation for service. I personally think those things will make MUCH more of a difference than which brand of processor you get.

gogiants' point is excellent.

And both processors are excellent.

The Athlon XPs are the best value, of course, and the 64-bit technology is promising. But, for video editing, I might give the Pentium 4 HTs the win by a nose. (And I know I'm asking for a fight.)

But, as I said, you won't go wrong with either. They're both excellent powerhouses. And a well-built, well-tested machine from a major manufacturer is, as gogiants says, more important than anything. (I'm personally impartial to HPs. They've always been very good to me -- and very good values -- and I love the firewire port on the front of the case!)

I agree with gogiants too, but good service doesn't have to mean a major manufacturer. Given that you want this system built for a specific job, I'd rather go to a local supplier and have them build something to meet my requirements. I can give you some recommendations if you're in the UK .
