Every time I have to do a render in V8 my heart goes into my throat. But again I have been proven wrong. After a six hour render from Cineform to uncompressed avi (1920x1080) complete with effects and a final file size of just under 600gig... not one crash (nor a black frame either).

Moving away from m2t files sure makes a BIG difference!!

I've had a similar experience by simply disabling my virus protection before I capture m2t using HDVSplit. Absolutely smooth sailing vs. constant crashing before.

As far as the end results go: native m2t captured and smart-rendered into m2t project played back on a PS3 is about the same as if you work in Cineform and Uncompressed: either way you are looking at first generation quality.

I've been using all versions of Vegas from 4 through 7 (I have 8 but haven't installed). I have done hundreds and hundreds of projects. I had one render hang years ago because Vegas had a problem with high-res still photos. Other than that, not one crash or hang. Don't get me wrong, plenty of other annoyances, but never crashing. However, given all the reports of crashing problems starting with 7.0e (I use 7.0d) and with various versions of 8, I have stayed away from it. Also, as Laurence points out, I think at least some of the crashing is caused by things that interact with Vegas, not with Vegas itself.

I actually did have one other crash, years ago, which I traced to a third-party plugin that worked inside of Vegas. I removed the plugin and the problem went away. It is a popular free plugin that many people use, so I suspect it may be the cause of many of the crashing problems reported in these boards (I don't want to publicly state which plugin, because the author may have since fixed the problem and I don't want to harm his reputation). I also have read many posts about problems caused by Cineform and Vegas not getting their versioning act together, and apparently certain versions of Vegas and Cineform don't "like" each other. So, if you have any problems with Cineform (which at the moment it sounds like you are not having), then read through some of the posts describing how to uninstall and re-install (and in what order) to make everything "happy."
