Performance expectations - text

Hi - I am just trialing Movie Studio 13 platinum as I'm looking for a fairly lightweight editor (to use alongside Blackmagic Fusion and Hitfilm Pro) For now I'm just throwing some test projects together to assess how well it performs. For this particular test I use AVCHD footage (just a single layer), with a simple text item on top of it. Now, this works well, and I can watch it full screen (on 2nd screen) with full resolution. However, as soon as I introduce animation AND a dropshadow it becomes very choppy. The chopiness persist on the normal preview window (when I disable the full screen preview) and even when I drop it to preview/auto quality. To me this is very disappointing performance, but I'm wondering if I'm missing something obvious?

Specs:

I7, 16GB, GTX970 (4GB)

GPU accelaration in preferences set to my GTX970

BTW, I do realise that AVCHD is not an editing codec, but I do expect a simple project like the one above to play smoothly. I have an aging version of Premiere Pro too (CS5) and there I can play the same footage (several layers), with text overlay etc without hiccups.

So....I am hoping that it's user error!

Any ideas?

How about without dropshadow? does the playback still suffers?

Hey Set - without it works fine..... However, I just tried to add the Hitfilm dropshadow (instead of the native one in the titler tool) and that works smoothly! So, seems to me that the drop shadow in the titler itself doesn't support hardware accelaration (or not as well)....whereas the Hitfilm plugin does. For now though, this is good enough for me.
