Photo distortion in VMS

I have VMS Platinum 6. When I drop in a photo and put it it shows up as stretched horizontally on the preview screen. When I render the movie, the photo is corrected to it's correct aspect. If I follow the instructions on p 45 of Spotted Egle and Rofrano "Instant Vegas Movie Studio" manual and first resize the photos to 720x576 they look fine in the preview but as squeezed horizontally in the rendered copy. Curious???
Thus I am just dropping the pictures in as is, but want to be sure the dotted line overlays (for the lost edges on tv viewing) will be correct for the final rendering. Should I change the preview window aspect to 1.0 for this purpose, or leave it at the default DV .9? I'm not sure which shows the overlay markings accurately since the markings stay the same and thus fall differently on the left and right side of the photos in the two different aspects. Which aspect should I use?

If your photo is distorting you should make sure you have the maintain aspect ratio checked. Photos that were too big used to be a problem not that long ago, but VMS has improved how they handle different sizes - how far seems to depend on who you talk to.

3 things to consider here. 1)The source - the photo, its resolution and how much of it you wish to see. 2) Project setting. What are the project setting you are dropping the photo into. 3) What are your render settings? 4-3 , standard wide, hd, and a whole bunch of other options. Your problem sounds like a disparity between #2 and #3. I wouldn't think you would have to mess with preview - but I could be wrong.

Those dots are just a guidline. There is no guarantee on the precision because different TV's may display slightly different. They are there to let you know that when you get close some TV's may clip the view. I haven't messed with it much but I seem to recall those lines are adjustable as well.

Good luck with it!
