photoshop-vegas glitch

dvideo2 wrote on 4/28/2010, 10:16 AM

This concerns JPEG images on my timeline:
If i minimize vegas to go into photoshop to crop a picture, when
i come back to the timeline, that picture has glitches (goes black, is oddly seemingly layered with other pics, has unexpected errors) and is only resolved by closing and re-opening the project.......I never had
this problem before.......any suggestions?
thanks....

I've been getting some weird PSD file behavior after editing in Photoshop. Had a file that was throwing an error, renamed it and all was fine. This occurred when bringing a 9c project into 9d.

Why not do the cropping in the Pan/Crop window?

If you're using a Pro version of Vegas, do yourself a huge favour and install Open In Graphic Editor.
It's free and is an excellent tool.

Since Vegas would have already scaled your image when you first dropped it on the timeline I can see where cropping it might cause some problems that other edits wouldn't trigger. Even a simple resize might be different from a crop since image proportions wouldn't change.

Is it only jpeg images?
Only when cropped by photoshop?

Do you have the option

"Close media files when not the active application"

Checked?

Vegas may not be releasing the JPEG file for Photoshop properly.

Not a lot of luck with psd's here either. Jpegs load fine, psd's show up red on the timeline and just don't seem to work. Never had issues before.

Mike,
The "Open in Graphic Editor" sounds very intriguing, but do you have any more info on it before I install it? It obviously looks like a script.

CClub, yes it is a script and it works beautifully.
It's been "Grazie approved" so you know it has to be good :-)
Think of it like right-clicking an audio event and choosing "Open in Sound Forge" as it works the same way.
When you run it, Photoshop (or whatever paint program you designate) opens up with the image already loaded, a new image is added as a take over top of the existing one in Vegas, make any desired changes, save it (even under a different name) and it's instantly updated in Vegas.

Here's what the readme file says:

Use this script to edit media Event in your Graphic Editor.

How to use:

First of all, run "Open In Graphic Editor Script Setting" to set your graphic editor path
and the editing mode ("Open source file" OR "Open a copy & add as take").
Note: You will not be able to edit your media until Graphic Edit Path is set. You have to run
this script only one time or when you want to change your graphic editor.

Select an Event containing a graphic file and run script.
Valid graphics are: *.gif *.jpg *.bmp *.dib *.jpe *.jpeg *.psd *.png *.tif *.tiff *.tga *.targa

I saw the readme file, but the other files are dll's - how are you supposed to install them ?? When I think of scripts I am thinking of JavaScripts like Photoshop uses - it was not clear from the readme in the zip file just what you were supposed to do with the included dll's.

mikey, drop the dll and the PNG into the appropriate script menu folder.
Launch Vegas and it should be there.

OK, thanks - I'll go read that scripting section in Spot's book since I'm not sure where those folders are (I'm used to the Photoshop stuff which does it different - time for me to learn this angle of Vegas too :-) )

Down in C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 9.0\Script Menu
are some files, but they are all .cs so that does not look like where they go - is there a missing script directory I need to create or is it under some other rock ?

OK, after (cleverly) looking in the scripting forum, I guess everything should be in the forums JR talks about in this post:
