Physically splitting up my project

I am in the process of backing up all my previous projects to DVD-R for safe keeping. The problem is, some of the files are well over 10 gigs. Here's an example.

I open the Vegas file in Vegas (of course), create a new folder to store all the clips, resave the Vegas file in this folder and check the "save project media with file" and trim to 2 seconds on either side. So I now have a folder that contains all my files for this specific project. This folder is now 10 gigs. I downloaded a utility, File Splitter Deluxe, so I could put the folder in DVD size chunks, but it will only accept files not folders.

I thought about ZIP for these files to make them all one, but was worried about about possible problems from compression on my video.

Do any of you have some experience backing your files up that you could help me out with? Thanks.

ZIP compression will not harm the video, but it won't help much in storage. especially if this is DV video.

I have used file splitters to archive my videos, specifically hjsplit.

I'm not trying to shrink the size, just make the folder one file type so that I can split it.

Then zip will work fine for that. It is a lossless compression scheme.

ah, well on closer inspection, it is a .rar file. Is .rar bad? Thanks for the help.

rar is great. Add in recovery info, if you can, and that will help prevent any possible CRC errors you may get with archiving (applies to zip too)

I don't bother with zip or rar or anything like that. I burn as many files as will fit on to each successive DVD until they're all backed up, however many DVDs it takes.
