Picture compilations

Can I:

1) edit the length of a piece of music (audio track) that I add to play behind my slideshow (pic compilation)

2) choose transition styles (e.g., cross fade, slides, etc.) between my photos

in DVDA2?

No, use Vegas to do it. Then bring import the rendered audio/video file into DVDA.
