Pinnacle Capture Problem

Just installed Vegas 8. Am trying to capture analog VHS using Pinnacle 510-USB. As soon as I attempt to capture I get an error message stating "Pinnacle 510-USB could not be opened. Make sure that it is turned on and is not being used by another application or user". It is turned on, and is not being used by anything else. Can anyone help?

Sorry, but you cannot capture in Vegas with your Pinnacle 510 USB. As far as I know you can only capture in Studio 10/11. If you want to capture analoge material in Vegas, you need to get an AD convertor like Canopus ADVC 110 http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC110/index.php

You connect this one via firewire. USB converters are never universal and need special drivers to go with the actual application.

It has been my personal experience that all of the Pinnacle hardware is proprietary and only works with their software. I agree with UlfLaursen, get a good firewire analog capture device. The ADS Pyro A/V Link is also another good device that is inexpensive and works with any software that can capture from firewire.

If you've got a camera with composite inputs could you just use this as a 'pass-thru' analog to digital to harddrive?

Play VHS tape/signal out via composite cable to camera input....Firewire from camera out to CPU (camera set to playback/VTR)

If this would work for you and you only have a small number of VHS tapes to capture you could save the expense of a converter.

As a test, try Amcap.exe (google it)

or here, second half of page

If that allow you to see your Pinnacle, then you know it's not just Pinnacle stuff that will allow you access to your hardware. One of the main problems about Analogue/TV Tuner capture setups is the ability to select a channel to record on.

Vegas has been known to access such stuff sometimes - for me - I always had to use my Tuner app first, to select the channel, then Vegas would allow that channel to record. I get the same error message as you with my current TV capture card.

Amcap will let you record and choose options such as compressor etc - it takes a little working out though - but if it gets you going, then great.

But I do third the firewire route - it really is sooo much better for video.
